I have a Eurotunnel day trip booked in early December and it occurred to me that we could be in Bruges for lunch and then wander/stumble round the town for the afternoon. Anyone care to offer up recommendations on restaurants and central places to park ?

I've only been there once but I drove. There are a few car parks around the 'rim' of the old town on the SW side (which I guess is where you will approach from). The train station car park is cheaper than the undergrounds. Then it's no more than a short but pleasant walk into the centre.

And remember to order:- 'One gay beer for my gay friend, one normal beer for me because I am normal.'

Don't forget to have a look around the nooks and crannies.

Thanks for this, I will probably head for the Station car park. I am still trying to crack the code on the other responses. rolleyes

There's a very good restaurant opposite the old Cathedral (not the big main square) where they have recently resurfaced the square in block paviers. The work was ongoing when we went in Feb anyway. Can't remember its name but it had a massive open fire and they cut the meat on a slab in front of you before cooking it to your taste.

I stayed here which is about 2 minutes walk from a car park under the big building with the red roof it's easy enough to get there from the motorway.

Once parked its about a 15 minute walk from the main square where you should go to Cambrinus for lunch and one of about 400 beers.

There is another place near by, but I can't remember the name off the top of my head.

But what about that horrible dual carriageway on the walk from the station?

Sorry, must stop it...

Had a great weekend "In Bruges" a few weeks ago.
The place is full of top class restaurants,6 with Michelin stars if my information is correct.
We ate in one with no star which was in a basement!! an absolute gem of a place.Really top notch, the chef had a chat with us, he worked in a 2 star place then started on his own. If he keeps putting up grub like we got he'll have a star in no time.
