"His wife, Clare, had become increasingly worried about her spouse after reaching him on his mobile telephone. He has slight dementia."

He would fit right in.

I like the bit at the end:

Mr Steward was unconcerned about all the attention, citing age as a liberating factor in his escapade.

"It's a lot of fuss isn't it?" he said.

"When you get to 80 and beyond it doesn't matter much. He's out there waiting for us and you just got to wait your turn."

He rejected a suggestion to get a satellite navigation system.

"Why would you want one of those? You can't get lost. There is no fun in that."

Absolutely love that last comment on the Sat Nav. Although I must admit, I ordinarily keep a road map in my cars just out of habit.

Oh you're absolutely right, and i'm sure there's more perhaps even older, it was just a dig on the stness of the joke - it being OLD rather than aged, if you see what I mean smile

People driving because they fancied a drive doesn't worry me.
People driving and not knowing why they are driving or indeed where they are going does.

If Pathagaros (sp?) had waken up that day and based everything on 12 instead of 10, we would all be "younger" right now. In certain ways, it is just a number. smile
