PS2 to PS3 compatability

So, can most PS2 games be played on the PS3?

I'd love Championship Manager, but no release for PS3 so thinking of getting the 2007 version which was for PS2. Will it go?

Later versions of the PS3 are not backwards compatible. If you can get a 60GB release version second hand then you're laughing.

Only the very first PS3s in 2006 had PS2 compatibility, after that they took out the PS2 chip.

Oh for godsake, gonna have to go look at what mine looks like now to see if it'll do what I want. It's black with a slot in the front, that's all I know.

What was the contributing factor to them removing this chip? Unreliable or was it due to cost? Do they still want people to buy the PS2? They are still being sold in the shops which is something I suppose.

It was cost, it was a chip in America, but software emulation here, I've tried it on a few PS2 games and there are little bugs with all of them.

I'm glad I kept my full size silver PS2 installed a hard drive and chipped it as meant I could get a proper spec PS3 although I might buy a release spec PS3 one day just for nostalgia.

Proper spec PS3? If anything, the later ones are missing spec from the launch day machines. Mine has the full complement of USB and memory card slots that are missing in later versions, the PS2 compatibility and all the same software features of the later machines.

IIRC the original European 60GB PS3's were backwards compatable with about 60% of the PS2 games, I believe this went up with later firmware updates until the 80 and 40GB PS3s without PS2 backwards compatability were phased in.

The original US/Japan 60/20GB PS3's played nearly all PS2 games, but we never got them.

I meant instead of a new slimline one, but as I mentioned I want to buy a launch one at some point
