Public Information Films.

They don't make 'em like the used to....

I was staying at my Grandma's in 1977 when this came on the telly.

The Finishing Line

I was eight years old.

Gave me nightmares for years.

I have read somewhere that it was only broadcast a couple of times before being withdrawn for being too disturbing.

That was brilliant! Pretty well thought out - it's got to shock after all.

But I just found the one we watched in primary school around about 1990 - Robbie. That freaked me out as an 8 year old kid.

For some reason the first part of Robbie isn't working but the second part made me cringe again.

And for all the people around my age (26), who else remembers SPLAAT?

I think this one is just as relevant today if not more so.

I can assure you that there are government run training courses that are still promoting the ideas behind that. If not, perhaps, the idea of kids on train tracks.

People tend to speak as they find. I could never understand how people got killed on level crossings.
Until a few years ago, my only experience of them was a laborious affair, waiting for ages, only for a small commuter train to trundle past at 30 mph or so. I could see why drivers or padestrians might become impatient and not wait for the barriers to lift. But even so, I thought they must be pretty dumb not to see the train. And after 20 years of driving extensively, I was still baffled.
Then one day I happened to stop at a mainline level crossing. Feck me. From audio warning, lights, barriers down and return was 50 seconds yikes And a further two came through in the next 10 minutes!
Intercities at full chat. That opened my eyes I can tell you. I'm sure if this point could be got over to the public, you'd probably eliminate most of these accidents.

Cant be arsed to post the vid links, but the lines from PIF's that stick in my mind (I'm 37, so we are talking early 80's)

"Would you like to get in my car?....."
(punch and judy don't go with strangers)

"Oim in complete control of the situation"
(road safety - donkey driving a car or similar?)

And the one where the couple are waving at the guy out at sea trying to get the coastguard

There's a dvd set called "Charley Says" which has loads of these Public Information films from the 50s all the way through to the 80s... it's pretty good if you like that kind of thing. I had a copy ages ago but I haven't got the foggiest where it is now frown

I loved the road safety and health and safety cartoon types that were often run on Saturday afternoon during World Of Sport.

My favourites were -

The Honking of the Weaver Bird - about lane discipline on motorways

Isaac Newton told us why - about working at heights with heavy objects

Sailing Dingey - about how to report an incident seen out at sea

They were humorous and effective - so much so that I can still remember many of the lines

One of the funniet ones was a gaffer guiding an HGV into a loading bay, speaking entirely in French. The driver turns out to be a Scouser and says, Are there many of you French fellas in Sheffield?"

I'm still extra careful not mix radials on the front with cross plys on the back of my Austin 1300 for the fear of ending up on its roof!

And "morning cold start... poor, fuel consumption... heavy"
