I have just seen 'Moon' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/

What an astonishing, clever, thought provoking and powerful film.

It has gone pretty much unnoticed; it was only shown in select cinemas for a short run and I was pissed off I missed it but after catching it tonight it was well worth the wait.

It is Sci Fi but without any of the usual Hollywood drivel. What a story - if I say much more I will spoil it - it is best to go in to this without any preconceptions.

I think it will be out on DVD / BR soon so go and see it if you like your movies a bit different but still brilliant. Wow. I think this is the best thing I have seen for a very long time.

WARNING SOME SPOILERS IN BELOW POSTS DONT READ ON IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT!

EDITED AGAIN TO SAY: REALLY DONT READ ANY OF THE REST OF THE THREAD WITHOUT SEEING IT FIRST BECAUSE IT WILL RUIN IT.

DON'T

I MEAN IT....

IT IS A GREAT FILM AND IS BEST VIEWED WITHOUT READING OUR BELOW PONTIFICATIONS.

FROM THIS POINT ON THERE BE SPOILERS...

I rented this the other night and rather enjoyed it. I liked the 2001: A space odyssey vibe, IE the feeling of being completely alone.

I would have liked the ending to be more than just a news report sound bite though.

ETA Spoiler...

Are the clones designed to have a 3 year life span? IE he doesn't seem to stop bleeding/coughing up blood after a while.

Missed this in the cinema too (quite annoyed, would have been great, it was only on for one week in my local) but have it on blu-ray, enjoyed it very much, the soundtrack was great and they somehow conveyed the other-worldly atmosphere well. Sad and happy ending both at once!

<spoilers>

I assumed they were either made that way, or it was some sort of design fault they couldn't fix. Maybe the clones went mad after 3 years of being alone, they needed to know they were going home 'soon' to stay sane?

VVVVVVVVVVVVVV

I think the 3 years was built in by design. The clones had to have a goal. When 'New Sam' logs into the archive of Sams (with Gurty's help) and he watches them 'leave' you hear them say things like "My hair is falling out" and groaning when lowering themselves in the death pod. Their inevitable deterioration is built in.

The most interesting question is who was the girl he kept seeing? Was it his daughter at her true age? Was there an original Sam still on Earth?

I just loved the film's attention to detail. The way the new clones had a better tan than the old Sam, Earth seemed to be more desert covered than green, the deterioration of the base, I am sure there is plenty more; all outstanding.

Watched it myself yesterday. Other than a couple of minor plot issues which irked me slightly, I thought it was superb. Made me cry at the end too.

I thought I made a thread about this film. But maybe I didn't.
It was much much better than I thought it was going to be, and the special effects were spot on.
There was no visible use of CGI in it.
Great story too.

[SPOILERS KINDA]

I thought the end was going to be a sinister betrayal, and it all seemed like it was set up to be one. But in the end it wasn't. That confused me. My only gripe though.

Just ordered this on Blu Ray thanks to this thread. I hadn't heard of it before, always keen to hear about new and good SF.

Couldn't help myself and read the spoilers though... Still can't wait to see it.

Spoiler:

I had that thought, but then you have to consider that they were clones of each other so had the same personality. Yes old Sam had learned to be calmer and less of a hot head but that did not make New Sam inherently evil. It was a relief that there was not a betrayal as it would not have fit with their personalities.

SPOILERS SOME MORE... Honestly, don't read them if you haven't seen it. Please.

I think that the old Sam might have realised that if he was in young Sams position he would probably betray himself too. So realising the betrayal was going to happen he decided to just sacrifice himself. Young sam was acting shifty. I swear.

The issue I had, and I'm probably projecting myself onto the characters, was why they didn't ask what the hell was going immediately it became apparent that they were the same. That, and why GERTY went from keeping it a secret to wanting to help.

They had. New Sam had worked it out way before Old Sam staggered into the room from the hospital wing and they first 'met'; New Sam shouted to Gerty when he first carried him in after pulling him from the wreck and dropped him "why does he look like me?". He will have worked it out as Old Sam recovered. He was pissed off - hence the beating of the boxing ball and his stand offish behaviour. He was looking at his clone. And what could they do; comms were 'down', they were on the moon, alone and with no way off, and only had each other. I feel it is a pretty accurate representation of a very odd situation.
