Chemistry Advice....

Ok, warm 2 litre bottle of diet coke, pour a quarter of a glass and it froths so I put the 2 litre bottle down. While I am waiting for the froth to subside I put some ice in the glass. After about 30 seconds the bottle flies across the room and 99% of the diet coke has exploded onto the kitchen floor.

What I dont understand is that the top had been off the bottle for a good 30 seconds before the liquid inside exploded so violently. I could understand if it had happened as I was unscrewing the cap with pressure being released but this happened with the top off!

Any ideas?

get a beer bottle, open it and then hit it hard on the bottom, a few seconds later it will explode out the top. Just a larger slower reaction in the big bottle by the sound of it.

I had a uni mate who used to occasionally smack his bottle on the top of his mates to create that effect. He knew he'd made a mistake when he did it to me... None of his other mates had podium experience
