Probably a silly question, my M3 is showing 1300miles until its first proper service. The next time the car will be used is a trip upto perth. It'll probably be a 1000mile round trip, with some keener driving as I get up north.

The engine oil and brake fluid icons are showing that they need to be changed at the impending service.

If the car was yours would you get it done before the trip ? or leave it till after? I know the sensible thing is to get it done before i go, but its going to be pretty inconvenient to do so.

Oh p.s i know harder driving reduces the time till service, if the distance to service reachs 0 is this something the ecu records ? something that a potential future buyer would interpret as abuse of the car?

Personally I'd get all of it done before the trip so you know it's done and dusted and you're not constantly looking at the number of miles to the service. Sods law you'll go over the 1300 miles before it's serviced.

I'm not sure how it affects your BMW warranty if you go past the service mileage indicator or wether ot not it's logged on the ECU. It will however be shown in the service booklet for the car as the AUC will fill it in. If I was buying it I wouldn't be too bothered if it was slightly over but some people may be more picky about it.

It's always a pain haven't book a car in as I'm doing the same. However it's really good to get the car back cleaned and feeling all fresh again.

Get it done if you can.

I would be happy to go over by at least 1,000 miles. Your dealer would give an opinion.

Probably a dumb ass question but I'll ask it anyway. As the servicing is now condition based and variable i.e. not a fixed mileage, if you're buying a car how do you know if it has gone past the scheduled service point?

If you're doing a long motorway trip you may find the mileage due goes up. I certainly did on my e60!
