Load of rubbish, we trialed sky HD (always used Virgin)

1. You can only record 1 channel and watch another (unless you have more than 1 box) Virgin 2 channels and watch another.

2. Far far better choice on their catch up section (their equivalent of Sky's anytime)

I told the sky guy that we didn't like having only 1 channel to record and he said it was because they expected people to use the Anytime facility. I did mention that I thought the choice was rubbish on it! and that was why we were not continuing with the sky trial. (There were other reasons that was just one!)

At the moment it is just random programs on there, sometimes you get new series episodes a few days before they are on but unfortunately Sky don't have the ability to let you set preferences etc due to satellite bandwidth. Virgin have the ability together with BT to do true VOD due to it coming over broadband or cable.

Sky are putting together a VOD package which looks good and it will be on the STB rather than a PC like the current Sky Player. This will use the network connection on your box connected to your broadband.

That will certainly be welcome. I have had a google but can't find the info, would you point me in the direction of your source (if it is the web)? Just for interest, I am not doubting what you say but it would be nice to note further news/updates.

That's because the box only has two inputs rolleyes

Whilst Virgin may allow you to record two channels and watch another (Christ, how much TV do you watch exactly?!) their Set top box is absolutely dreadful. I don't think I've ever encountered one that doesn't lag hideously. Oh the fun and games at trying to change the channel, getting frustrated and questioning whether the batteries are dead until after a minute or two when the box finally decides it will change channels.

i'm one of the lucky ones, the misses works weekends at sky and we get it free hence why i cant moan, she was invited to a sky thing in perth a few weeks back that was to let the staff know where the company was going over the next year. thats what they told her but whether they go through with it is a different story, i know the new upgraded hd box is true, i had to take the day off to get our box changed under warranty and the installer guy confirmed they were being told new bigger and better hd boxes were coming out

There will be a bigger box, but I seriosuly question your missus' thoughts on the amount of channels that can be recorded. The input box that is fed from the satellite dish and links to the Sky boxes only has eight points, meaning at the moment you can have a maximum of four Sky+HD boxes. This is because one feed from the dish is for viewing, the other is for recording. So there would be some seriously expensive changes needed if you could watch one channel whilst simultaneously recording another four because, if you had Multiroom with a few Sky+/HD boxes, they wouldn't be able to work properly.

True about the 3D thing, I've heard some extremely fascinating tales about what that is going to do.

And you get FREE Sky? I only get half price, and I work full time for them! I must be getting humped, will look into that.

No lag issues with ours. Very occ reboot but certainly no delay changing channels

And we watch as much TV as we want thank you, is that ok by you rolleyes As I'm up for work at 5.45am and not home until 7pm I tend to record a few shows on later than 9-10pm, is that ok by you!

Plus Sky = st service (not the guys that come to your house but on the phone)

Back to the original point of the thread Sky Anytime - crap selection. Virgin catch up 100x better

You can actually record two channels concurrently - which is what I do so that I watch Freeview, then the recorded progs and skip past adverts and anything with Bruce Forsyth

just a note to add you have to be watching a second recording or some other non-live event

You've overlooked that Virgins HD uptake is ridiculously slow, they have what? Seven HD channels compared to Sky's thirty five or so?

This was one of the reasons why we considered changing, however many of sky's HD channels are sport which we do not watch. They are increasing their numbers of HD choice so we've decided to be patient. Sky sales woman tried to tell us it was going to be 6 years before Virgin added anymore HD channels, a month later we had 3 more.

The 4 tuner thing is rubbish, however there is a 1.5TB box being almost certainally introduced next year.

Some people want to make up any excuse to dislike Sky.

The bottom line is that Virgin is not a competent service and their hidden charges are reprehensible.

No excuses, Sky have been trying to charge us £80 for a service we never took on because a member of staff clicked a wrong button. This is has been going on for 4 months even though they have admitted it was their error.

We tried Sky we didn't like it, parents have used Sky for years no problems. For us Virgin is the preferred choice. All I've done is express our disappointment in what we got, the HD choice wasn't worth it to us in the end (£36/ month cable, broadband and phone). Had we been happier with Sky we'd have stayed.

And re: the OP query Anytime is definitely rubbish

Brabus, some genuine questions:
Why is Virgin not competent and what sort of hidden charges do they throw at you?

I am a happy Sky sub but the day will come when the true VOD from Virgin forces me over to the dark side.
When Sky offers true VOD over broadband, how will they cope with the speed issue? (i.e. their bad luck at having to use BT's POS last mile of copper?)
Also, any idea when that VOD might launch?
Thanks!
