Help me please - Tasmin Gearbox needed
Discussion
Not sure where to post, but starting here.
Our Tasmin 2.8 FHC needs the 4 speed manual (Ford) gearbox replacing and I don't know where to find one and it's making me sad.
Please can anyone help in any way, shape, or form? It really would be appreciated as want her up and running gloriously again for the Spring.
Thank you so much in advance.

I don't have the answer to your question per se, although if a 5-speed upgrade is an option, a Ford T9 or Borg Warner T5 will work with a little elbow grease and ingenuity.
Just and FYI...
[quote]Attaching a modern 5 speed overdrive transmission to a Ford Cologne V6 engine is a bit difficult. This text deals with two possibilities; either the Ford T9 transmission or the Borg Warner T5 transmission. When using a T9 with a Cologne V6, only the T9 from a Scorpio has an input shaft long enough to reach the crankshaft. However, the Scorpio T9 uses an electronic speed sensor and as such has no connection for a cable speedometer. All XR4Ti T9’s have a cable speedometer connection. However, the XR T9’s have too short of an input shaft. The pilot diameter is also larger on the XR T9. For the XR T9’s the pilot bearing will have to be placed in the ID of the flywheel. No commercial bearing exists to do this so a custom brass bushing needs to be made. Pilot Bushing for T9/T5 Installation While the bolt pattern of the T9 matches the bolt pattern of the Capri 4 speed there are some problems with the Capri bell housing. Only the Scorpio bell is correct but the Scorpio T9 is exceedingly rare in the United States. A Capri 2.6/2.8 bell housing can be used but it will need to be bored and have an enclosed tube installed to clear and seal the T9’s integral shifter rod. The tube must be sealed or oil will leak out and water will leak in. The stock Capri clutch disk can be used. The stock Capri speedometer cable attaches correctly to the T9. The Merkur Scorpio uses an electronic speed sensor for speed indication. The automatic speed sensor can be used when connected to a short speedometer cable. Fabrication of attachment pieces will be necessary.

you need to search for a Ford Type5 Box (ebay for example)
http://www.burtonpower.com/technical_1/type_5_gear...
to fit a 5speed isnt so straight forward. the position where the gearbox is hold on the chassis is differnt. so good luck with chassis modifications and welding.

Cheers guys for the replies.
The gearbox is, so I'm told, more economical to replace. We had trouble selecting reverse, and second, fourth...anything except first!!
It's just the normal 4 speed, petrol, manual, 1982 2.8i.
If any of you have this I'd really appreciate if you could PM either myself or Johnny so we can come to arrangements.
Thank you so very much once again.

My 4 speed to 5 speed was perfectly straight forward with the gearbox mountings fitting directly. The gearlever was a bit further back than the 4 speed but only millimetres and a shave of fibreglass fixed that. The nut? that holds the speedo cable is different and so the cable is now jammed in and the calbe is cabletied to the chassis. The big difference is that the V6 5speed input shaft is longer than 4 cylinder 5 speeds.
However as you are going for another 4 speed that's not relevant but if you change your mind it's easy enough.

Just a quick bump.
Have been offered a gearbox but I need to give an answer within next two hours. I really have no idea of cost - can someone give any pointers?
I know on one hand it's priceless and the cars health is in question, but on the other it's 3 days post Christmas with three children!!
Thanks in advance.

You might try - http://www.mwrcapri.co.uk/.
Yes I know they are Capri people.
They provided me with Ford bits and might have a gearbox to meet your needs.
