a8 gearbox oil change tame tech
Discussion
hiya,tt,
still debating wat to do,
do i have to go thruogh audi to purchase the oil,
£550 to change 10 litres of oil is a joke,
the prosidure is piss easy thanks to you,
if this is any info, when cold, the engine revs go up and down
on there own in drive for the first few m ins,
is this down to the choke, in old terms or something new.,,

You made one of these then???
The engine revs goin up and down is usually a air leak / vacuum problem or the throttle body needs cleaning out and given a basic setting.
The modern equvilant of choke should have the revs up to just under 1000rpm on cold start, gradually dropping to the normal idle speed, shouldnt go up and down up and down.

hiya,
the only bit that i need to sort out with the filler is the hook bit,
wat size is thehook, hard to tell by lookin at it on the pic,
i was thinkin of using a piece of microbore bent to suit,
the engine revs are just under 1000rpm wen cold,
if you stay stationary no probs,
its wen you move off from cold in drive that the revs go up and down
with fluctuation of 2/300rpm with light foot, goes wen warm.
can you tell were to get the oil, apart from audi,

ta tt,
No idea where you could get the oil apart from Audi.
It comes in a audi botle with not other numbers on to cross reference.
Try ringing round ZF Auto box specialists, ask them if they have to oil for the A8's and weather they will sell you some. If they can get it in a drum or something like that, will be cheaper than the litre botles the dealer has.
Its genuinly very expensive stuff, there isnt even much markup on it through are parts dept.
Does the idle go funny when you raise the revs/ touch the throttle not in drive?? is it teh same in revers or are you going to fast by then to safely test??

hiya tt,
the idle is ok, if itake it up a bit to like 1100 it sounds like it
cud be on 7, and not 8. [cold] further on and all is well.
wen warm all ok engine wise, dont know wer the plugs are up to,
looks like audi have cornered the market with the oil ,,
as ive said before, i live in the wilderness in wales,
nearest is bangor, 45mls, no gas, just got lecy and broardband
so goin to a zf trans place is 130mls,, probably back to my home town, liverpool,
has its pros and cons but well better here
audi have said if i use them to do it, if anythink goes amiss after the oil
change i will have a case , do you agree.
one more thing, the car is parked on a 1 in 6 hill i hear a little rattle
on start, think its oil drain, [cams]
i park it nose down wat do you think.
ta tt well apriciated rattle goes strait away,.

Remind me what engine it is.
If its the V8 petrol from the S4 then that noise is the timing chains as long as it goes away quickly its normal. If you got the earlier V8 with a cam belt then it will most probably be the tappets, not sure if the slope will effect them, I wouldnt have thought so.
What the dealer are getting at is when they work on the car the work is garantied. If you dont put enough oil in or somthing and the gearbox blows up your stuffed. If they do that, you get a new gearbox and someone gets a writen warning.
However, if the gearbox is dying and they change the oil and its no better or continues to die through no fault of there's, they wont fix it for free.
IF it helps the sticky out bit of the hook on the end of the tool is about an inch long, if you get under the car and look at the bung, it got to fit in there.
