Hi guys,

Should be viewing a 99 Golf 1.8 20v next week and I'd appreciate some pointers on what to look for.

I already know, and appreciate that it handles like a matress, has a pathetic power output and is utterly undeserving of the 'GTI' badge on its boot but as the need for a car is pretty urgent and most things down here at around £2k are completley rubbish, the winning car needs only be really tidy, well built, not be falling to bits, not have 9 owners, not have triangle tyres, and be able to stop, go, and turn left and right. So it's all good.

What about cambelts - getting mixed messages as to the interval. How much is it to replace them?

How is fuel economy? Rubbish I'm guessing? Whats it like on a run?

Thanks guys smile

Mate has a 99 GTi 1.8

Standard VAG stuff - coilpacks, maf. I do my timing belts at 4 years or 60,000 miles because it's cheap insurance.

Not that hard to tighten up the handling either, and the engine is very responsive to chipping as well.

Not without a turbo it isn't, which is the one I think the OP is talking about...

Audi A3, Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia, would also be on the list for me as they represent pretty good value as well. In my personal experience of a 20VT 1.8 the A3 is much better value for money than the MK4 GTi turbo. To be honest you should be able to get a 20 VT for that budget anyway and in the case of the Audi it's 1MPG better with a tubo than not!
Get the water pump done with the cambelt as they're made of chocolate pretty much!

If you think its so rubbish why are you buying one? lol confused

PS - The 'crap' GTI is the 115PS 2.0 8v, the 1.8 20v is a bit more powerful and slightly more deserving of the badge. The real fun starts with the 1.8T though.

Because in the £2k car market there isn't a great amount of choice and an average car when it was new in fantastic condition now is a better buy than a great car when new in average or poor condition now smile

Leons interior isn't finished as nicely as the Golfs.

I'd spend a bit more and get the best of both worlds with a 1.8T Golf, but the OP has evidently made his mind up that he wants to spend £2k on a non turbo Golf.

I would much rather have a Leon or a Bora/Toledo. If there was one around in budget i'd buy that instead. The South West really is not the place to buy cars (When I buy for myself I usually have much more time and go much further afield).

It's a distress purchase, a family member needs a car, fast, as her previous car expired. Hence I'm not being that fussy about what it is as long as its half decent, well screwed together and is suitable for medium distance commutes (ie no Fiestas).

As much as a n/a Golf GTI really isnt my cup of tea - its a half decent car. What I need to do now is learn what to look for to make sure the example I've found is a good example of this half decent car smile
