Just been to see this, what a fantastic film. Very hard hitting and realistic.

It's made me think.. I really like this whole gritty realistic portrayal in british movies.. Can anyone else think of/suggest any with a similar "feel"? I can only think of Children Of Men frown

not a gangter film but if you look up 'Gritty' in a dictionaty it does not bother defining the word it just tells you to watch Mike Leighs 'Naked'

Thanks for the suggestions guys, some good stuff here smile Layer Cake is a superb film. I haven't seen any of the others boxedin so I'll get watching!

Can anyone recomend any more "low key" stuff? I've become too engrossed in American films I rarely pay attention to the ones filmed in blighty!

Love, Honor and Obey.

Don't forget Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch

Plus another vote for Layer Cake and The Long Good Friday, both great films.

Guy Ritches films aren't gritty, and Layer Cake while ace, isn't either.
I think you need to go old school for that reall gritty feel. Long Good Friday and Get Carter are both good mentions, try Gumshoe, that is of the same vein.

edit. I remember Face as being OK.

Not a gritty British film but one that is still very watchable and handled very realistically in a cold war way, The Forth Protocol. A Michael Caine film, has Pierce Brosnan in it and a lot of it is filmed around Milton Keynes. biggrin

It's based on a Frederick Forsythe book.

Most Mike Leigh films would fit the bill.

I'd say Ken Loach would be in right area too - less of the Guy Ritchie crap and more of an unflinching portrayal of unglamorous and difficult British lives. Whether you enjoy the political subtexts (they're often not that 'sub'...) is another matter.

Start with Get Carter (please please please make sure you get the original)
then Long good friday

Fourth Protocol is a good shout

Yeah ken Loach and Mike Leighs films are gritty (nuts in may excepted) but most are probably not what the guy is after just a guess I can;t watch them and I like them smile

After catching a glimpse of Peter Andre on the scrounging bear show last night I had to watch that film.

The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael.

Very gritty and realistic film but with a TRULY SHOCKING ending (murder and rape).

What has been seen cannot be unseen and all that.

Good film but I can't help wondering how much better it would have been without Danny the Dire in it. That bloke really gets on my tits.

Bob Hoskins makes up for it though. I reckon if you're after gritty British films take a look through Hoskins and Ray Winstones back catalogues and you'll ahve covered most of the best ones.
