I've been driving an E39 530i Touring for almost 5 years now. It has, without doubt, been the best all round car I've owned.
Before that I had an E36 328i Touring for 5 years and before that an E30 325i Touring,
So what do I trade up to now and what should I avoid?
Should I consider a diseasel, or will I be disappointed with something like a 525d?
Does anyone have links to an E60 buyers guide?
My budget is about £13k and I do around 12k miles p.a.

My only opinion is avoid the 525i/d range. They are a 3L engine but restricted to call it a 525d. That dissappoints me somewhat as BMW have only designed 2 mainstream engines, the 2L and 3L and based their model insignias around them. The 116d is the same engine as a 320d for example if you didnt already know.
Why people would fathom buying a deliberatly strangled engine is perposterous.

Why are you thinking of changing by the way? Do you simply think that time is up or are major parts needing replacement? These E39's will last significantly longer im sure than your E30 would have done.

My E39 is 8 years old and has done 126k. There's really nothing wrong with it. It's just that after 5 years in the same driving seat I fancy a change.
I know that the economics of such a change make no sense. I'll lose far more in the next 5 years on the depreciation of an E60 than I would on any repair of the E39.

I have an E60 and think it's a great car. Engaging to drive when I want it to be and great at eating up motorway miles when I need it to.

There is loads of space in the saloon - only an E class Merc tops the Touring space.

Agree that the E39 is a great car but if you really fancy a change I'm pretty certain you'd be more than happy with an E60.

I think the E39 530i sport auto is the best all round BMW ever made, however.....I loved my 535d sport touring, it has moved things on in many areas, and not so good in others.
I don't think you would be disappointed, but do think you may miss the E39 at times.

I would buy a petrol over the diesel myself, 530i or 545i would be my preference, they all do around 26mpg from the 520i through to the 545i, the diesels do around 4mpg more, the 535d I had returned 26mpg over 25k miles and 10 months so no better than a petrol.

My E60 525d returns 38,3 mg average over 20 odd k miles , this includes many high (ish) speed hoons across Europe

OK i do not do so much city driving but still impressive for the size of car

I was considering changing my E39 for an E60 a year ago. Because used prices have held up so much over the last year, they're barely cheaper than at the end of 2008, so I'd suggest waiting a couple of months and seeing if they take a big fall soon.

My E39 now has 157k miles on it, and I can't see any compelling reason to change it for an E60 which doesn't do anything terribly differently but requires me to lay out an extra £15k.

It'll take a little while but I would expect E60 prices to soften once the new model has been out a while - usually seems to happen with BMW's - once a model is no longer current prices fall quite rapidly.

Yep, this is exactly why I have had my E39 fro more than 8 years. E60 prices really need to take a tumble to make the change good value for money.

They did in Feb, I nearly bought another 535d touring, was decidng over two, both with Media, and both under 40k miles and one was at £13500 and the other at £13k, oh and both 2005 models.

In the end I got an A6 estate as I had already had a 535d sport touring with all the toys including heads up and decided I would try something different. But, it just shows how much prices dropped.

I was offered my for my A6 avant last week than I paid for it, and quite a bit more too.

So, which engine have you got in your A6 and how does it compare to your 535d ?

Sadly, by the time I'd noticed they had dropped, stock became scarce and they started to go up again.

This, I like my car and don't seem to have any motivation to change :/

I would rather stick a grand towards the car sprucing it up

I have the 3.2 V6 petrol.

They are completely different cars, the 535d is a very focused drive, it is extremely impressive the way it shrinks round you when you press on, the feedback from it is also pretty stunning considering it is a 5m long two tonne car. And once remapped it is seriously quick too, especially over longer distances.
However it is still a diesel, and because of that you loose that refinement you get from a 6cyl or V8.
Also the BMW does lack the comfort factor, and I ditched the run flats after a 1000 odd miles.

The A6 is no where near as dynamic, it is a wafting machine, nothing more, but it is extremely comfy, the engine is alot nicer than the diesel, however good the diesel is, I personally prefer the petrol, MPG is pretty much the same for both, the pre LCI 535d was crap economy wise and I would always take a 545i over the 535d if given the choice.
The interior on the A6 does have the edge, however, the iDrive was better. The MMI is easier to pick up, but when you get to know them both the iDrive is definitely better to use while driving.

All in all they are both really good cars, if I had only one car in the household I would take the 5 series...............probably.

The saloon is quoted on BMW's site as 1735kg. The 335d is closer to 1660kg.

335d wet weight is 1640...

Either way, the 535d, does not weigh any where near 2 ton.
