To be fair the reason people tend to be a bit ashamed of it was because Britain at the time did tend to treat the colonies like st and have very little respect for the indigin indign local population. Had we treated them better and not tried to convince them that the British were superior in all respects, we'd probably still have some of it, and parts of the world probably wouldn't be in such a mess.

but we are superior in all respects, maybe we should have offered a referendum to a country before colonising it?
