Outside lights - halogens or what else?

We've got a number of old and cheap halogen PIR/security lights at both the front and the back of the house but these things seem to blow bulbs constantly.

Has anyone fitted anything better but not too expensive - we've got loads to do and no money to splash around so no designer solutions please! Is the answer better halogen lights than we have already or are there other alternatives?

Any thoughts? experiences?
