Stud removal

Need a bit of help folks. A little while back I had a problem with coolant coming out of the exhaust (remember?). Well, I've only just got round to stripping the engine down to have a looksee. I'm trying to get the inlet manifold off which is held in place by 6 bolts and, in opposite corners, 2 studs with nuts. I need to get the studs out to take the manifold off as it won't lift straight up due the dizzy being in the way. I have managed to get one stud out using the two nuts tightened together technique, but the other stud (under the dizzy) is too short to do this. What are my options? I can't see how the dizzy comes off and not sure if I want to take it off. I don't want to damage the thread on the stud by gripping on it with mole grips.

Get a nut and cut it in half so you end up with two thinner nuts

Sorted! I didn't use the 'nut cut in half method' in the end Pies. I think the two halves of nut would have been to small to get any purchase on with the spanner. Instead, I used the 'squashed nut in the vice method'. I squashed a nut so that the thread was slightly eliptical and the tightened in onto the stud then untightened it and the stud came out with it!
