Is there a gay accent?
Discussion
Listening to an airline 'cabin attendant' on the TV I found myself thinking 'yes, he sounds gay'. This seems like ludicrous prejudice, but there really seems to be a particular way of speaking which many gays have but which heterosexuals never seem to. Am I imagining things?
Do gays use it to recognise each other perhaps?

Absolutely there is. It's the definition of 'camp'
Camp derives from the French slang term se camper, meaning “to pose in an exaggerated fashion”. The OED gives 1909 as the first print citation of camp as "ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical; effeminate or homosexual; pertaining to, characteristic of, homosexuals. So as a noun, ‘camp’ behaviour, mannerisms, et cetera. (cf. quot. 1909); a man exhibiting such behaviour". Per the Oxford English Dictionary, this sense is "etymologically obscure".
just type "he's a poof" and you could have saved yourself a whole lot of typingCamp derives from the French slang term se camper, meaning “to pose in an exaggerated fashion”. I think there is definitely a tendency for gay men to have a certain manner, but of course it is impossible to stereotype. For example, the first friend of dorothy that I personally know that springs to mind, is a rugby playing beer drinking bear of a man, with none of the stereotypical mannerisms.
I am rubbish at sensing these things, with a clearly broken "gaydar". Can gay women be easily identified with those with gaydar too? I've no idea...

Manchester/Wigan/Widnes has quite a gay accent, to my ear at least.

Agreed. That bloke that presents 'Family Fortunes' pretends to be married to Tess Daly.
