Gear selection issues.
Discussion
Have tried the search function guys but it brought up nothing. So apologies if this has been covered....
On the way to work this morning i had issues selecting 1st (sometimes), 3rd (all the time) & 5th (all the time), then the problem went away a bit once on the M25 but 5th on occasion would be difficult to select. Now at this point i'd like to say that the clutch Master Cylinder is on it's way out but surely if this was the problem i'd have issues with all the gears right ?
Can anyone shed some light on this for me please.
Thanks in advance?
M3J.
Master cylinder fluid level - if it has dropped you will likely have some difficulty in selection. Topping it up may temporarily help.
Fingers are indeed only on the clutch plate, and when mine went, give random issues with getting in to gear.
Not sure how sensitive the gearbox is to it's own oil level - may be worth checking that too.

When you say fingers, are you on about the ones that are on the clutch assembly it's self or are there others like for example on the base of the gear stick?
As for the flid levels, are you talking about the level in the clutch master Cyl. ?
As beanzy said. Its fingers on the clutch assembly. My feelings are that its pointing to this. I thought that on the test drive. As for the flid levels, are you talking about the level in the clutch master Cyl. ?
Ok will at least have a crack at the Master Cyl. oil frist. Anybody know the type & also i want a tub of engine oil to pop in the boot can anyone tell me what sort is best?

The fingers are the metal Triangle shape things in the centre of the clutch.
I'm pretty sure the clutch master culinder is a bespoke TVR part - not too expensive though, £60 ish from Racing Green TVRQ0012

Best oil?? You'll get loads of answers
I use Shell Helix because it's a good oil and readily available at any Shell gas station.

I already have one of these on `stand-by` so to speak.

Yes sorry probably didn't word that bit too well if i'm honest. Just wanted to know the typical grade of Clutch Master Cyl. oil and engine oil that are used.
I use Shell Helix because it's a good oil and readily available at any Shell gas station. Cheers for the replies guys. Strangely enough when i came out of work last night the gear selection issues were no more !
But, now it's running a bit lumpy and if held in gear creeping along in traffic it's `kangarooing` quite a bit. Probably needs a good clear out - or time to dry out after the recent weather....

I had an issue with the coil packs following our Spa trip, due to water getting at the generally deteriorated seals. I think it's running better than it ever has now! A good drying out, often seems to sort some issues out...

So what's the clutch fluid level in the master cylinder like and has it got any black bits in it?
Regards
Simon
Haven't checked the fluid level as yet as it's dark when i'm on my way to work and dark on the way home. Am off shift this Thurs/Fri so hopefully have a look at it then.Regards

Had the car been used much over the recent year or so ? Sounds to me like you are teasing out problems with this one....?
To be honest i really don't know but if i had to guess i'd say that it hasn't been used much at all.morebeanz said:

Thats what i thight might be the problem so, i was going to buy a spare one and swap it around to see if that clears it.

Hi John, as Mark says, I bet it's the fingers - you'll get intermittent problems until you won't be able to select any gear with the engine on.
Best to get it to someone now, before it fails when you least need it to - Andy @ APM anywhere near you?
Cheers for the reply Donny, I'll change the clutch myself mate i think. Prices are a bit on the steep side though don't you think ! - circa £500 depending on where you get them from - Considering that the clutch plate part is probably ok and i only need the `finger plate`.Best to get it to someone now, before it fails when you least need it to - Andy @ APM anywhere near you?
