Hi guys, newbie here...a group of friends and I are looking to take a first trip to Le Mans in 2011 ( I know it is a long way away, but we need to save up beer tokens, get permission from better halves etc etc).

We have decided to spend £1000 on a barge to get us there and back in a bit of comfort, then flog it when we return to the UK. Looking at Ebay and Auto Trader now, we can get Lexus LS400s, older E class Mercs and 5 series BMs for that money.

We want to do it properly, sticker the car up etc, but for those of you have been there before, are there any suggestions as to what to spend the grand on please?

Ta!!

hire a car and spend the extra cash on Beer then you can afford to come along in 2010 instead of waiting until 2011

I looked at that, but not many places seem to want to let you go abroad, and those that do, put a limit on the amount of miles that you can drive...

Stop messing about and get down there next year! wink

As for cars, how about an A8 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1996-AUDI-A8-4-2-QUATTRO-AUT... bit classier than a lexus, but probably just as reliable.

Not thought about a Jaaaag! Other options could include an older Range Rover/Landcruiser/Isuzu Trooper..might be good for the campsites?

Surely the only way to properly do this for someone hailing from this fair isle and given the history and all that is to go straight for a Jag?

Buy the cheapest possible car that will fit you all in and spend the rest on beer and immodium. Do not take a crap in any of the toilets.

Limo has been done before i'm affraid. It had some discreet windscreen washer jet pointing sidewards to soak onlookers I seem to remember!

A limo in the campsites is very likely to stay there, the ground is not exactly flat and if it rains then no chance. Never seen a Maybach there either but £1k is likely to the badge only. I think the Jag is the best option, always be someone in the campsite with the ability to repair it it it makes it down there.

Looked on ebay at some XJ40s and think that one oc these will be the way to go. Will have to travel light cos there wont be too much room in the car for 4 people, tent and beer!!!
