Quick question for the PH mitsi-minds.

I'm quite a fan of the early Evos, especially the 4s and 5s. There are things i dont like, but i would look back in dissapointment if i hadnt run an Evo for a year or two.

however, one big question is motorway capability. My understanding is that they are very short geared - 4000+rpm at 85mph stuff.

were there any versions of the "classic" Evo (III-VI) with a sensible 5th / 6th gear ratio?

I think you'll find they will all rev at 4-4.5k at around 80-85mph to be honest. Certainly the proper early ones do. My II RS (c. 320bhp and 1215kgs) is surprisingly economical off-boost on the motorway though! biggrin

In what way are you questioning their "motorway capability" - noise, mpg, performance, comfort?

None of the Evo IV to VIs come with a 6 speed box, so you're likely to find they all rev relatively highly at motorway speeds. These aren't GT cars, after all, but they will put a big grin on your face coming off roundabouts and on to motorway slip roads!

If you're going to be doing a lot or motorway miles, get an VIII or later FQ with a stock exhaust, they all come with a 6 speed box so will rev at around 3,500 rpm at 80 - 85 mph and are a bit more civilised for racking up long trips.

i love my TME so much, but it does rev high on the motorway. it doesn't bother me with the noise, i like it, but i can't help thinking about how much petrol i'm using when i'm just cruising, as i'm not even having that much fun at 80!

UTHs evo is great when it goes over 100 and the pasenger door starts whistling!

Easily solved by the traditional Evo random noise fix - fit a louder exhaust so you can't hear it! laugh

I run a Evo 6 as a Daily driver, with of course the obligatory loud (Well Fairly) aftermarket exhaust and other basic mods.

Motorway journeys arn't terrible, the ride is good, along the lines of BMW's 'Firm but not crashy'.
The fuel consumption isn't too bad either, if your cruising at 80-90mph its around the Mid-high 20's to the gallon. Lastly the noise is fairly loud though, road noise and exhaust combined cause this, but the exhaust note isnt annoying, it's not a drone like some may be, but this may differ with different brand exhausts.

You need to own one though, amazing cars and mine leaves me with a smile everytime I get out! Deffiantly no regrets!

One tip though, I'd Aviod Evo 4's or earlier (unless with later engines), check out the MLR (Lancer Register) and search about 'Crank Walk', its quite common, but was sorted from the 5's onwards.

agreed simon, anyone who likes driving should own or at least drive an evo, it really is brilliant. i just WISH i didn't live in west london full time, i get so little time to go for proper drives. luckily the hockey season finishes in march, just in time for spring/summer

Err, 140+mph is fine for me, thanks, especially as my pasenger doesn't feel like they are going to fall out of the car when I get there wink

I just bought an Evo V and my first trip in it was back from Ipswich where I bought it to South Wales where I live. It was great no problem at all. yes gearing in 5th is a bit short but certainly nothing to worry about.

Why not get a bad boy ICE install - four 12" subs and a few thousand watts amplification should drown out any road noise!!!

Not sure what all that weight in the boot would do to the handling though.......

The Evo looks chavvy enough without 4 subs in the boot etc.

Might as well get some under car neons innit.
