"Polite notice"

I always thought that people put "Polite Notice" on no parking signs in the hope that it would be misread as "Police Notice", so how on earth has it become commonplace on other signs?

The most recent I've seen was on miniBill's nursery door asking people not to be late with payments. Am I meant to believe that the BiB will be interested if I'm a couple of days late with the direct debit

Someone sent me an email this morning with 'gentle reminder' in the subject line.

FFS. Either the reminder is important or it's not. I wonder how many levels of escalation are built in to that reminder process?

Gentle reminder -> Polite Notice -> Reminder -> Advisory -> Warning -> PAY fkING ATTENTION TO THIS!

I would imagine it's because people have seen it on parking signs, not realised it's supposed to be misread as "Police Notice", and it has thus entered common usage on other forms of signs.

It's because people want to put "Oi, Halwit, Read this will ya", but fear that won't get the appropriate response, therefore put it as "polite notice" in the hope that someone actually bothers to read it.

I realise that, but what sort of idiot thinks that an utterly inoffensive notice needs a note on it to remind you it's inoffensive

We get that all the time from our "offshore colleagues", usually about 30 minutes after the first mail. They get ignored.
