Probably safer to put this in here, for the moment, instead of the lounge

iPayRoadTax.com was born and raised on Twitter.com, exactly a week ago.....
Now, following news stories on Road.cc and Bikeradar.com there were lots of forum postings, both for and against the iPayRoadTax.com concept. I’m not going to be able to please everybody all of the time but earlier today I posted some video evidence of a driver shouting at a cyclist to “buy some road tax”. This is why the campaign was started; we’ve all been on the receiving end of such misinformed opinions. So, thanks for your faith in my fledgling idea. I’m chuffed to bits that the iPayRoadTax jerseys and armwarmers will get out there and start spreading the message that cyclists have every right to be on the road.
It's not me I hasten to add! Now, following news stories on Road.cc and Bikeradar.com there were lots of forum postings, both for and against the iPayRoadTax.com concept. They should probably do some research.
Theres no such thing as fecking Road Tax, so no, you dont pay it, no-one does.
Nobody pays to use a bicycle on the road and nor do they have to, because its written into the laws of this country that they are a public right of way.
What people DO pay is Vehicle Excise Duty, which grants them permission to use there cars on the highway aswell.
The whole issue is a waste of time and trying to explain it to someone who doesnt get it is futile. Just ignore them.

Irony - like goldy and bronzy only made of iron.
Website's opening paragraph reads:
"The majority of adult cyclists own cars. Hence they pay Vehicle Excise Duty, known, inaccurately, as road tax. Winston Churchill abolished this tax in the 1930s. He didn't want motorists to think a token payment gave them "ownership" of the road. Road tax doesn't pay for the roads anyway, general taxation does that"
And just to add I'm not for or against his message, he's entitled to his opinion, but I do fear that the potential for winding up motorists should be avoided.
There are enough d
head cyclists to do that for us. (I commute everyday to work on a bike).Edited by hondafanatic on Tuesday 24th November 10:38
I don't see any reason to raise awareness for a moot point either. Some people just don't like cyclists full stop and would argue the 'road tax' you pay is for your car - not your bike.
It is not up to me to justify not having to pay 'roadtax' to other road users when I'm riding a bike. If it was a legal requirement I'd pay it but it isn't so I don't (although I am insured).
If you can buy a car that is 'road tax' exempt why should bicycles be liable for any duty any way?
I'm not sure how viable it is as a proposition anyway, costs would likely be greater than revenue collected (what would the annual cost be - £5, £10?) I'm sure everyone would agree that there are more important things for the Police to do than check that 'cycle tax' is up to date.

Yep, it's a futile arguement. The people who spout off about "road tax" and bikes are the least likely to change their opinion. I think wearing a jumper like they are selling will just wind people up.It is not up to me to justify not having to pay 'roadtax' to other road users when I'm riding a bike. people like Jeremy Clarkson are partly to blame with their "cyclists dont pay road tax so i can kill them in my car" esque comments.... no i trust clarkson to know what VED actually is but millions of his fans lap it up and think what he says is gospel...
i prefer the "not a moving target" jerseys some of the lfgss forum made up!
