I commute into work, I washed my jacket in Bio washing powder, its ruined waterproof wise,, I bought that nikwax but it hasnt worked.

I am looking for a waterproof, windproof, breathable, and for it to be lined as I dont like it sticking to my skin. Also do they do thermal versions or would that be too hot?

I dont want to spend much more than £50 please make suggestions!!

I find Gill softshell sailing jackets are pretty good for cycling - warm & water resistant with a good cut. They tend to look a bit better off the bike than many cycling jackets too.

Gore-tex Fabric jacket is the only way to go

wear /wash gauranteed waterproof and breathable ,you cannot go wrong

Lots of choice but the Gore Bike wear ones are great value and cycling specific

There's a winter jacket test in the December edition of MBUK if that helps you narrow it down at all.

That jacket from CRC seems like pretty good value for money, need to get one myself still. Will take a look at this months MBUK.

Another vote for the Endura gridlock, though I got mine from wiggle. Dead comfy, seems to be cut in all the right places.

100% agree. I've tried loads of different stuff over the years and realise that you have to pay for good stuff.

Personally, I've tried the following:

GORE
Assos
Castelli
Decathlon stuff
Altura
Endura and others etc

IMHO GORE stuff just works, whether it be their windstopper or GORE-TEX.

I've got Castelli stuff as fit is good and uses GORE windstopper and GORE-TEX.

Assos is just overpriced and doesn't work for me. I have a nice blue Airblock 851 jacket (XL) if anyone wants to buy it off me.

Also GORE-TEX is guaranteed for life smile

I have a Gore goretex that I've had for ages (12 years+). Can't say I particularly like it, but it does "just work" as mentioned above.

Gore-tex use very old technology compared to what is available now. It's a long way behind the other materials in terms of its intended use...

Check out the US army materials report: http://www.montane.no/info-base/breathability.pdf re breathability vs waterproofness.

Needless to say, I've just bought an Endura 'Venturi II' (the PTFE version, not the less breathable eVent version). Works very well!

Haven't read your link, but from memory isn't Goretex PTFE?

Not in it's purest form. From the link, the variant of Goretex they tested didn't far as well as either eVent or products marketed as 'PTFE'.

Gore-tex is PTFE based and has been constantly been developed over the last 25 years

check out the latest winter jackets test in MBR the Gore-tex jackets all came out very well and ahead of the others in terms of breathability and waterproofness

It comes in different grades with differing capabilities

But it all works

And is Gauranteed for life

Are the others ?

I think not

I would have to disagree with you on the old technology
the alternative "ptfe" laminates use technology that was rejected by Gore 25 years ago

The US army report uses a method of test which has no credibility in the eyes of comfort physiologists ,and has not been linked to results from human subject testing

look at the MBR test ...

btw eVent is ptfe.....

A lot of the technical mountaineering clothing is moving away from various Gore fabrics now. I would have thought that a US army materials test was somewhat more scientific than a bunch part time riders testing for MBR? scratchchin

If PTFE is more 'breathable' than any of the Gore fabrics, what other 'comfort factors' are the MBR guys basing their finding on?

you would think ,but the truth is that these tests are very far away from what happens when you actually wear them ,hence wear tests have much more credibility than a bogus US army test which completely misranks fabrics

Gore-tex is PTFE ,and so are a few others now ,the difference is that Gore have been developing it for 30 years and the others have just jumped on to the bandwagon
The difference is in what you do to the PTFE to make it work

Gore-tex is still the market leader

I've got 2 Gore Bike jackets and they are great. The black one is for riding in daylight hours (spring/summer/autumn) the yellow one for now.

In summer I can cram one into my tiny saddle bag in case of showers.

In the winter I use the yellow one and have one or two laters of Trespass thermals under. Water proof, wind proff, warm and all my sweat gets carried away.
