Help DDE control unit failure

I seem to be having a rather expensive run of bad luck with my 1 series lately. Had my DSC control unit replaced a couple of months ago and since then I have had problems with the car cutting out and an emisions lisgh flashing up intermitently. Anyway its been in to BMW today and they have diagnosed DDE Unit (diesel engine control unit apparently) failure and quoted £612.44 with a 40% contribution from BMW HQ.
Has anyone else had this? Also could it be feasible that something done during the change of the DSC unit could have caused this problem with the DDE unit?
