Megabusa oil change?
Discussion
Could anyone tell me whats the best way to go about changing the oil on a dry sumped westfield megabusa?
Is it just a question of draining and refilling the sump tank or does any oil need draining from the engine, oilcooler etc aswell?
Also being new to bike engines could anyone recomend a suitable oil to use.
Any help/advice would be most welcome. Thanx

The dry sump will mean you need to check you've refilled to the proper level with the engine warm. Drain the oil from low points in the system and replace the filter, then refill using most of the oil you'll expect you'll need, drive the car to get the oil to operating temp and then finally check the level just after you've stopped the engine and top up as needed.
You need to drain the dry sump tank, the sump itself (I disconnect the hose from bottom of sump tank to sump) and change the filter. Ideally you should also change the oil in the cooler circuit but that isn't likely to hold a lot and since your total volume is likely to be quite high (my dry sumped Fury takes 8 litres) doesn't really matter terribly.
Use a bike oil. If you're road use only then most 10w40 synthetic bike oils should be OK. When it gets hot the Busa oil pump isn't the most efficient (housing expands apparently) so I use Silkolene Pro4 Race 15w50 to try to maintain the oil pressure. Even so when it's hot my idling oil pressure is usually about 7psi.

There is one drain plug on the sump, and there is another on the very bottom of the dry sump tank. You need to remove both. I used to remove the hose of the dry sump tank until I found the drain plug, so now I remove this never have to check for leaks afterwards to make sure the hose is sealed well.
1) Take car out for 5 minute drive.
2) Remove sump plug and drain.
3) Remove oil tank plug and drain.
4) Change filter if you wish to.
5) Refill with approx 6 litres of oil.
6) With engine running, check oil level is between the two inner ledges of the oil tank.
In order to remove the oil tank plug, you can either do it and let it spill on the aluminium floor, or you can pop a 20mm hole in the floor which makes it all much easier and cleaner.
As for oil, I have had great results with Silkolene Pro 4T Race 10W40 fully synthetic in the Busa engine. It's not cheap, but it's certainly kept the engine running very nicely up until now (lots and lots of track days).
I hope this helps.
