Hi TT
I recently bought an A4 2.0 tdi avante
it needed a MAF sensor & EGR to alleviate an emissions light
I now get a strange pulsing sensation from the engine in any gear at about 1900 revs. After 2000 revs ,all seems ok?
do you have any ideas why please? It feals like it doesn't want to pull
also, would you reccommned a remap by Awesome gti for more power & mpg?

Thanks in advance TT !

MAF very rairly brings the light on, but they do go wrong quite a bit. How do you know it needed one? Who fitted it??

Customer complaint when the MAF isnt working is, Pulls fine from idle and good acceleration when the turbo spools up arround 1500-1800rpm but totaly runs out over power really early and wont pull say over 3200-3500. New MAF and pulls all the way to 4000rpm ish.

MAF fault codes are generally only logged falsey, when the wiring is faulty or its been unpluged, or when there is a boost leak of EGR fault fooling the ECU into thinking the MAF sensor is at fault.

WHEN THE MAF REALY FAILS, IT NEVER LOGS A CODE.

When the EGR valve was replaced ( they do go wrong and bring the light on), did they do the basic setting on it?? IS quite important and can cause running and idle issues.

Pulsing like that could be the EGR valve not being setup properly.

But could also be a boost leak, can you hear a boost leak, is there loads of black smoke when you give it the berrys.??

Oh and Its not multi tronic is it??

Hi TT
I changed the MAF myself because it drove better disconnected, so assumed (wrongly) this was the problem.
Took it to Awesome GTI who diagnosed it as an EGR and glow plug causing the light on ,so replaced and now works with the MAF connected.
how could i tell if the EGR is setup correctly? I thought Awesome were quite well respected so assume it is setup ok?

as for a boost leak noise, what does this sound like? I don't see too much black smoke either.

It idles at 950 rpm - is this right? it seems that i feel a wobble in the cabin at idle.
I was going to get a remap by Awesome also, should see better power at low revs and better mpg - so they say.
What do you think?

Thanks for the help.

You say they replaced the "EGR". I asume you mean the electronic EGR valve, is the correct. EGR is a system made of a number of components, including solonoids, cooler, pipe work and the valve.

Asuming is was the EGR valve that was replaced.
I'd pop back to the GTI place, just ask the question, you did do the basic setting on valve, as I'm getting a slight surge at said rpm.

2.0TDI's the PD engine. All have a rough idle to a degree, you can feel the car jolt ever so slightly as the engine misses a beat every now and then at idle. They did this from new, but some cars are much worse than others. Unless its really bad my advise is to live with it, I could give you a big list of things to try, if you really want let me know, some of which we have had great results with, but on some cars we have never been able to stop them doing that, despite numerous new commponents and hours spent emailing and talking to Audi UK and sending them data from the cars etc.

One of the things we had done to try and hide it is to raise the idle rpm, we can only change it by 80-100rpm so at 950 i reccon someone turned it up as high as they could to make the lumpy idle less noticable.

If you have a boost leak, when the car is on boost you will hear a rushing of air (not the normal turbo noise, louder) but as your not having smoke and didnt have a fales MAF fault code that is unlikely.

Regarding remaps.

I've had high performance cars in the past and pushed boost limits right to the max of what you can have before you overspeed turbos and run to lean and melt pistons. So if you want it remapped go ahead.

But remember we do change turbos on these a fair bit (due to failure), when there stock, and you are going to be stressing the turbo a bit more if you run more boost, so make sure its nice and warm before you thrash it, and let it run down for a bit before you switch it off, to be nice to the turbo. Most importantly but do make sure all is well with the standard engine and the running of the engine before you have it remapped.

Hi TT, i will pop back and ask them to check it out. they replaced the EGR - cost me about £300 - so hopefully replaced the whole lot.
I would like to try and sort the tick over out, so anything you can send me to try will be much appreciated. i was thinking of buying a VagCom form Rosstech and having a look.
What kind of mileage should i expect to get from the a4? are they good for a couple of hundred thousand?
Thanks for the input as usual.

Cheers!
