Oil cooling question

Help guys bit of advice needed , my GT03 has a water cooled oil cooler (see picture) i was thinking of changing it to a air cooler mounted in the front of the car ,is this going to be any better ? i,m upgrading the rad to a pro-alloy unit so i,m not concerned about water temps being high due to the water oil cooler . starting to think changing it all will be a waste of time .

It also depends on how you drive the car while on track.
If you rev it and use a lot of engine braking then you'll be heating the oil up and it will get quite hot.
If you're more the cruising type, in a higher gear using the torque, then the oil won't get so hot.
I found that on the first couple of trackdays I did I was getting the oil rather hot!! Until I read up on here about oil temp on trackdays and then I started using a higher gear and the oil wasn't getting quite so warm.
I'm going to be fitting an oil cooler of some kind over the winter so I can drive the car on a trackday quite a bit harder than I have been up to now.

Ok I've just fitted a fmoc. Its quite a bit of hassle to run the pipes down the tunnel and secure them etc without damage on the sharp screw heads that protrude all the way down and avoiding the gear stick.
Extra brackets to fabricate and weld at the front to mount it on.
I have found that it over cools the oil so now I have fitted a thermostatically controlled take off plate which keeps the min temp up.
If you don't track it alot then I wouldn't bother personally, but now that I have done it, it has been worth it.

I believe the M400 has a thermo sandwich plate and the oil cooler is mounted behind the offside pod.does it still have the water cooled cooler too ?

I don't actually have an M400 so I'm sure someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.

Edited to add that as far as I'm aware the M400 doesn't have the standard water to oil cooler. It just has the air to oil cooler.

Ok guys thanks for the input , the m400 does not have the water cooler only the air oil cooler mounted in the side pod .....while the engine is out it makes sense to do it but the list of jobs i've got to do is very very long , there is lots of room in the side pods to run the pipes does anyone see why there could be a problem useing this route ??

Only crossing the front wheel well might be an issue as the front wheel runs close, ie it rubs, on full lock so it might risk catching the lines.I actually ran my accelerator cable down the offside sill, that's before I read up about the problems of melting cables etc...

For the 3 liter motors, that stock oil to water cooler mounted beneath the oil filter doesn't really do very much, at least not here in the States. Not enough surface area to make a very efficient heat exchanger. For our customers, we recommend removing it and replacing with either an air-to-oil front mount oil cooler, or a better designed, more efficient oil-to-water heat exchanger.
The front mount oil cooler is simpler to install, and so far we haven't seen any problems with oil temps, even when running on the track in 100+ degree (Fahrenheit) weather in our Darth Vader car.
The oil-to-water cooler may be better in colder climates - the advantage is that since water comes up to temp much quicker than the engine oil, the heat exchanger will serve to bring the engine oil up to operating temperature must faster. However, installation is more complicated and it's a bit more difficult to find a good place to mount the oil-to-water cooler.
The stock M400 in the US comes with an air-to-oil cooler mounted in the side, behind the side scoop. The oil-to-water plate is replaced with a non-thermostatically controlled sandwich plate. In our climate, this doesn't appear to be ideal - we still have issues with high oil temps on the track. Which seems to point out issues with airflow through the side scoops. Adding a second oil cooler in series with the stock cooler brings our oil temps back in line.

As Jim O. says, the M400 has an air based oil cooler in the side pod. There is no thermostatic control on the sandwich plate.
The problem with it is that there is almost no air flow through the side pods, so oil temp on track can easily go through the roof.
I've just had the standard cooler re-located to the front (pipes down the centre tunnel), and it is definitely far more effective. Will be monitoring it to see if it's too effective, in which case a thermo sandwich plate will be fitted.

Ok guys , thanks for the input looks like the best way to go is to fit the front mounted oil cooler with a thermostatic sandwhich plate , now the engine bay is empty going to strip all the front off will have alook at fitting the oil cooler up front , do you have to remove the floor to get the oil lines down the tunnel ?? or can you fish them dowm ? . thanks Simon
I probably have the only oil cooler mounted in a 3R in a side pod. You don't want to do it! It works well enough (mine's got thermostats, fans etc) but fitting it in is a right game. The issue is the side pods on the 3R are quite different to the M400. And, it's not the useless scoopes that's the difference... see if you can spot the change that matters
