Speeding penalty points to be eased

The Home Secretary has announced speeding law changes that could spare thousands of drivers from bans.

Penalty points could be cut from three to two for minor infringements, according to The Times.

Transport Secretary Alistair Darling agrees that a "sophisticated" approach is needed, David Blunkett told the newspaper.

"It should not be beyond us," he said.

The plans come after Conservatives called for points to be axed on all but the most dangerous stretches of road.

Motoring organisations then warned changes could send out "mixed messages".

At present, speeding drivers receive at least a £60 fine and three points. They are disqualified to drive when they reach 12 points.

Shadow transport secretary Damian Green said those caught by 3,500 cameras around Britain should not receive points.

Points should only apply in areas where the risk of death was greatest, covered by around 1,000 cameras.

The penalties for those breaking the limits near schools or in areas with high numbers of pedestrians would also be increased, Mr Green said.

Ministers are concerned about being outflanked by the Tories who see drivers as a natural support base and are deliberately targeting them with car-friendly policies. Mr Darling has already announced a review of speeding cameras amid mounting anger at the rising numbers.

Mr Blunkett admitted that people needed to be persuaded that the system was fair but voiced concern at burgeoning anti-camera campaigns.

"I want people to feel that policing in our country is common sense, logical and supportable," he told The Times. "There are areas where we can examine what needs to be done and transport ministers have indicated they are happy to do that."

This is how it will go

Labour: "If you elect us back in for a 3rd term we will impliment these proposals. We Promise"

Numptie Voters: "OK" *votes labour*

Labour: "oh look, we got in for another term, well as it 4 years till the next election, we wont impliment these changes after all. All in the name of road safety of course"

It's just like when they brought in hypothecation. They said they'd paint the good ones yellow and remove the thousands that didn't meet 'stringent new guidelines'.

I see yellow paint; I see no new guidelines...

I wondred why labour were pandering to the conservatives suggestions. Surely they would stick to there own political views I thought..

Then I read this..
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/040123/325/ek4oo.html

conservative 40% ahead in polls...
why dont they just call themselves conservative and be done with it rather than drop their views just for votes..

Adjustments to fines is all theyre playing at.
Oh some might escape points or have less of them, but its still just a money making exercise at the root of it.

Unimpressed? I am. A bit fat thumbs down and another blinding idea from bloonkit.

JMGS4 - Much as I would love to know where all the money in this country goes, I don't think it is all on champagne pishups.

Dodgy benefits, dodgy asylum, dodgy "Urban Regeneration"/"New Deal", Dodgy Domes, schemes for sure, but what else that we don't know of?

I know I am cynical but why reduce the points for each offence? simple 3 per offence = £60 X 4 offences before a ban = £240 minimum. 2 points per offence = £60 But now times 6 offences before a ban = £360 minimum. It dosen,t pay to ban they need the income. As some have said 40% in the poles for the tories spending plans up the creek and next week school tuition fees and the hutton report to confirm the lies this is why they are doing this they see it all slipping away.
