An associate of mine has a BMW X5, around 51 reg which conked out and after a "diagnostic" from BMW, they say it needs a new gearbox at a cost of £4500 so he wants a second opinion and a rundown of his options. Any suggestions?

Many thanks everyone, that one arrived this afternoon complete with a list of additional work required.
Initial testing suggests it is an internal box failure...However It wont cost anywhere near £4.5k.
