My Continental came with a set of pukka Moreland Sheepskin mats. They were in the boot and not fitted. I have had great difficulty in getting them to sit properly and to look tidy. Anybody got any experience or tips please?

Do they not have any press studs and velcro fixings?

Yes. The velcro is attached to strips which go under the normal mats

Hmmm, puzzling, the pile should sit uniformly upright'ish and the fixings stop them from shifting or riding up.

Is the lining on the back perhaps cut a touch undersized and/or stitched up too tight/short maybe? If so this can cause them to ruck up and not lay flat and level. Have you laid them out flat outside of the car, inside your house on the lounge carpet for example, and see if they sit neat and flat?

Presumably they are thick pile lambswool, with the Hessian type backing with a cotton piping border around the backing?

They have a cloth back. I have taken them to be dry cleaned first then I will have another play with them.

Take the normal carpet mats out first then attach the rugs, works on the Arnage.

a connected question - I vaguely remember that the rugs can be machine-washed, can anyone confirm if this is true ?

Got them back from the cleaners and took the carpets out as well and found the problem. There are large retaining studs at the top and bottom of the carpet and these had not been pressed home. I cannot take the Drivers side carpet out completely as the throttle pedal will have to come out.

I fitted the rugs to the carpets and then properly located the carpets to the newly discovered studs and they now fit much better.

The cleaners did a good job for £45. I understand that you can wash them at low temperature with a non bio powder but I would hesitate to try it. Link attached

I hesitate to suggest this... but now you have the deep pile sheepskins in place you'll find that driving in the winter in old slippers and at times bare feet is what Bentley driving is all about. One reason why the move to metal pedals is a bad move in my view.
