Just been reading another post about the above and I could have sworn someone told me years ago that Lorrys are not allowed to be in lane 2 or the overtaking lane, depending on what of the above two roads you are on.. Can someone clarify this one please?

HGVs are not permitted in the outer lane of a motorway if there are three lanes or more.

No such rules apply AFAIK if the motorway has two lanes, or on dual carriageways.

I personally think they should be banned from lane 2 of the mway also !

There is a stretch of the M42 where they are/were running a journey time test and banning lorries from the outside lane of this two lane motorway.

If they operated a similar system on M - roads for lorries as they do for mopeds etc this wouldn't be an issue - if a lorry with a gross weight of 44 tonnes had to have a minimum of (say) 420 bhp to be allowed on an M-road they would be able to maintain a constant 56 mph up hill and down dale = no need for one lorry overtaking another = no two mile tail back as one lorry doing 56 mph crawls past another going 54mph.

Since this isn't going to happen they should put a ban on lorries using the second lane of two lane motorways (there are plenty of countries on the continent where lorries in the outside lane are banned and this ban is enforced)

i think lorries should be allowed to overtake but they should have some form of kers system, not the recovery bit but some form of boost so they can overtake quickly and therefore not hold up traffic. obviously there would need to be finer details of how often it could be used etc. but i think over all it could be a good system

You should see the three abreast crates on the M25 going up Reigate hill in the morning. 56mph , 56.00000000000000000001 mph and 56.00001 mph. How they haven't the brains to see the traffic bunched behind them is a mystery to me. No wait, they do see and couldn't give a flying fk.

A pet hate of mine this particular part of the M25

Or someone with common sense who knows if only lane one was used there would be mayhem and chaos smile

It'd have to be done on a case by case / road by road study to prove that it was merely common sense to allow lorry drivers to overtake on certain parts of mway. !

If you can't travel over 50 you shouldn't be allowed out of lane 1 in my opinion!

Might mean they'd have to improve the rail network though, cant see that happening eh?!

I agree improve the rail network and more people would use them and be off the roads.
