Advice from H&S Professionals

Having a chat with the boss today and he's said that he would be keen for me to gain chartered / accredited status within a H&S body, happy days!!

He's asked me to go away and research what options are out there and decide which path I would like to follow, so I thought I'd ask here for advice

The immediate thought was IOSH, but I know there are others out there. I'll give a little background and what career path I invisage, as this may prove helpful in suggesting options.

- 1st Class Degree BSc (Hons) Environmental Health (didnt become Chatered EHO though)
- Working within retail trading law, generalist pretty much get involved with anything H&S, TS, Age Restricted Sale, FS etc etc
- Looking to stay with current employer for a good while as the career path is set out (moving into a Manager position within 2 years)
- Long term career goal will be to move into contracting at a (hopefully then) senior level at a good day rate

Does my degree get me graduate status with IOSH (or anyone else)? as that would make becoming chartered alot easier! Is there another more suitable body?

I have done a 4 Day IOSH Managers course, all our construction Safety Managers go on a NEBOSH course; http://www.nebosh.org.uk/ and do further training which appears to be the construction benchmark.

I am currently GradIOSH and soon to start my IPD to get charted status.

A lot of it depnds on what long-term route you want to go.

The route I've done so far was a IOSH managing safely, then the NEBOSH general certificate and then the NVQ4. You could also go Nebosh Diploma or one or two degrees.

I've also done a number of other courses abrasive wheels, asbestosn noise at work, manual handling etc

Whatever qualification route you go for you will have to do 2 years IPD.

Yeh I'm thinking IOSH is the best path forward, it definately seems the most recognisable.

With my degree I should get Grad status and I'll be wanting to start IPD faily sharpish

Just gotta get all the documentation over to IOSH for them to review and get back to me!

I am HSEQ Director for a largish company running a team of 16 managers and advisors. I always advise guide them down the CMIOSH route.

Thanks for the advice Tony, it's becoming a no-brainer for which direction to take, IOSH seems the obvious choice.

Don't forget there are several routes to CMIOSH.

IOSH definately, then NEBOSH. I have IOSH, its a really easy course with a one hour written exam and a practical. I wish I had NEBOSH because the number of jobs out there utilising this qualifications is amazing, oviously its a growth area.
