330d auto m sport - auto box probs!
Discussion
After having to change jobs and doing stupid mileage i was forced to sell my much loved E46 M3 Convert (via pistonheads). I have recently bought a 2001 E46 330d m sport auto, within weeks of ownership the auto box completely failed and had to be refurbished. When returned, the changes were very “lumpy” so I took it back and it was found that there was a valve sticking in the auto box control module which was resolved. Since then there is a re-occurring issue when driving at speeds between 40 and 50 mph. At this speed if the brakes are applied lightly when travelling down any gradient, the car changes down from 4th to 3rd and then when lightly re-applying the throttle it changes down to second gear and revs at 4k revs + before changing back up through the gears again. It has been back to the garage numerous times since yet they cannot find a reason as to why the car is doing this and no fault codes indicated when plugged in to their diagnostic system. The garage have mentioned it could be something to do with the air flow meter or brake sensor but cannot define the cause. I am getting more than annoyed! Has anyone experienced a similar issue or can you suggest what could be causing this ?
The box refurb was approx £1400 and I have not incurred any further costs since. I have driven the car in Manual and sports mode today and not had the issue to the same degree. They must be missing some sensor issue???? I had kind of ccome to the same conclusion....... However, the garage is owned by my best mate who is committed to sorting it without further expense but I am just fed up with the issue. May be it is time to try elsewhere??
Has it been past a BMW main dealer for a software check?
Often little bugs are found, and an update is made which corrects the problem.
My ancient e34 520 would do similar, from a conflict between "change down a gear for acceleration" and "change down a gear for engine braking" and and when both happen at the same time, it drops too low, and redlines itself for a fraction of a second before having to change again.
If a sensor was changed to a different type, ie new updated type durin the refurb, and the ecu not told of this, it could also potentially cause similar problems, but trying to find a software update to match unknown sensors might be tricky. Check with the refurbers to see if any updated parts were used that may force a recode.
