Saving the world with energy efficient lamps

The irony in saving the world from itself. Living in Germany you have to separate and recycle almost everything. Today a letter from the local refuse company instructs us that energy saving light bulbs cannot be thrown in the normal rubbish as they contain mercury and are too highly poisonous to be put in the normal rubbish. BUT you MUST take them to the recycling site, they don't collect.
So buy these awful spectrum lamps to save energy, and then so you don’t poison everyone, use more energy to take them to be recycled…..
I wonder how many other schemes are like this. I wish I could find a way to make money out of this. Did anybody read ‘Catch 22’?

Oh yeah!!
Has anyone else noticed that your average 11W consumption energy efficient , but supposedly 60W output bulb costs over £8.00 per bulb.
When the old equivalent incandescent bulb worked out at less than 50p each if you bought them in bulk.
Oh And bytw the actual light quality and luminescence is no where near the same, just try reading an ordinary book under the same lights at the same distance from the bulb!!
Then try measuring just how long they last before the light quality degrades so poorly that its like being illuminated by a single candle!!
And finally try this, your average simple incandescent bulb cost less than a penny to produce, but the new low energy bulbs take over 70 times the cost to produce.
So now what have we actually saved!!

You can quite often bag them free, or you can get 5 for 50p in Homebase. I think B&Q were virtually giving them away last time I went there as well.£8 each

In some cases they emit just 60% as much light as traditional models which are being phased out of shops, it says.
The study in Engineering and Technology magazine concluded that consumers were being misled by the bulbs' packaging.
Of the 18 energy-saving bulbs tested over 10,000 hours by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, three stopped altogether.

These things are completely alien in Norway. Next time you see someone fart past in their coal fired electric car, take solace in the fact that here in Oslo office lights have stayed on for the past few months. They won't get turned off until next summer, folk go home on a Friday and leave everything on. Looks quite nice.
