Up to the 2nd December, a local Co-Op is doing Isle of Jura for £16.80-odd and a 10yr old Macallan for about £18 and I fancy getting one of them for some cheeky festive snifters.

Although I love a drop (or several!) or Irish Whiskey, I'm wary of the single malts - many of which I'm not keen on. I know that I do not like "peaty" malts like Talisker or Laphroaig for example. Yet I was given a bottle of Tormore (a Speyside IIRC) earlier this year which was bloody lovely.

So given the above, which one would I be likely to prefer? Jura or Macallan?

MacAllen, Jura appeals to a pretty specific taste.

Personally, I'm not really a fan of either Jura or Macallan (the "standard" expression at least, there are some top-notch single casks around.)

As Wade has suggested, there are some very good whiskies available for £20 and Monkey Shoulder is a very smooth, easy-to-drink dram.

For £20 you could try:

AnCnoc 12
Ardmore
Balvenie Founders reserve (I prefer this to the double wood which is a similar price)
Dalwhinnie 15yo
Glenfiddich 12 (maybe even the toasted oak)
Glen Moray
Johnnie Walker Black label
Tamdhu

All good whiskies.

good luck finding Founders Reserve these days! wink

keep an eye on the deals this Christmas - balvenie Doublewood, Signature and Glenfiddich 15 will all be in your price range, and have the right fruity notes.

Glenfiddich 15 is a corker and if you can get it for around £20 it's an absolute steal. Whoops any Macallan at a similar price in my humble.

Cheers for that (and others thumbup)

Sounds like the Macallan is best bet so far (of the two I mentioned). I'm not keen on Glen Moray (even though a local Aldi is tabling it at 16 squid a pop), and JWBL is a nice drop also. Not convinced by Glenfiddich. I am intrigued by this Monkey Shoulder though.............
