Difference between T2 and T3 light bulbs?

What's the difference between a T2 and a T3 light bulb?
I.e. between something like this:

... and something like this:

Same manufacturer, same output, same cap ...

It is the diameter of the tube in 1/8ths of an inch. T4 is a 1/2 inch tube. T3 is 3/8ths etc.
Doesn't seem to make much difference in performance, brand will be more important to lifespan - and price of course.
Edited cos a bit of that was complete bolloox.
