Anyone into caving?

After reading a National Geographic article on caving, it got me in the mood for it again, so I'm taking my girlfriend on her first expedition tomorrow

Anyone else tried it?

Nothing anywhere near as serious as the types of caves referred to in the Nat Geo article or the Times link above.

That brings memories back! I used to go in the mendips when I was a kid. The caves in and around Cheddar Gorge are amazing too. Abseiling down a waterfall in the dark underground was as close as I was ever going to get to being James Bond.

caving is the one hobby which genuinley scares me. Good luck to those who do it, but I wont do it!

I did quite a bit when I was 17/18 - with one of the Scout caving clubs, mostly the Mendips, some in Wales. I was never worried about getting stuck or flooded, but there are often plenty of oppunities to fall a long way onto very hard rock. One memorable moment was shuffling up a crack/fault in the rock, bracing my back into the roof, aware that if I stopped bracing I would slide all the way down and over a sheer drop!!

Wow! The Mendips are Poledriver's favourite potholing destination.

Sounds like good times!

The one we're going to is just a collection of tunnels and large-ish caverns, there's no vertical drops.

Did anyone read the National Geo article I linked above? It's pretty cool
