gear knob removal help

I want to remove gear knob in tam to replace gaiters. Trouble is the ferrule under the knob is loose but only turns once before i think it comes to the end of its thread. Im wondering if the gear knob has been screwed down really tight with no locking nut.(Is this possible?) Ive tried turning it with quite a lot of pressure but with no luck. I'm worried about doing other damage. Am I missing the obvious? Any ideas?

So long as the ferrule is loose the nob should undo counter-clockwise. Mine needed to be given some welly to undo it and it did not damage it.

You need one of those rubber strap thinghys round your knob

yes good idea the rubber strap thingy.

Definalty dont use the one with the metal chain on your knob, I am sure it would cause damage.
