Hi,

I might be going out to see someone in france in jan and then have the option of a few days in geneva afterwards. I dont have much cash so is it worth a few days - is there much to see? Seems a waste just to travel through places without a nosey?

Depends what you like out of life.

Honestly? Don't bother, it's full of bankers, finance bods, and generally little else.

If you're a banker, you might love it!

Not great in the winter. A lot of restaurants will be closed and the prices of everything there will make your eyes water.

The old town is worth a stroll around but not much else there to do other than stroll through the park, look at the lake and admire the very expensive real estate.

I've just re-read your OP.

Don't stay a few days.

Stay a day, nosey around (it's all you'll need), and move on elsewhere.

There's really not that much to see, and it is wickedly expensive for somewhere that's not all that special.

Not a place to visit if you're short of dosh - and it's a bit 'sterile'.
Montreux and Chamonix are close by - both cool places to visit - but again - not cheap, by any stretch.

I'm sorry, but to sum up Geneva, it is a sthole of a place!!! Returning from the Italian Alps a few weeks ago, I decided to drive to Geneva, ...... what a mistake, the place is disgusting, it is full of roadworks sending you round in circles, no signposts that make any sense, the traffic is at a standstill, it looks dull, depressing & dirty, and even the sat-nav couldn't find a way out. If there is one place in the world I would never want to visit again, it is Geneva!!!

Just got back from a few days staying there with a friend. It is a bit of a banker town, but in the summer it would be pretty nice to see the lake, mountains and so on.

It's VERY expensive though, even by London / Paris standards. Worth a nesey around if you're passing though...

And to add the airport is like a small version of Gatwick.

Boarding a plane in the 30 degree heat through their 'greenhouse' like tunnels was an utter joke.

yesI liked Geneva but it's not somewhere to spend long. On a positive note the local speciality is steak tartare, if that's your kind of thing.

Assuming you are into these sorts of things

Home of the UN - museum and park worth a look.

Home of CERN - museum / visitor centre worth a look.

Lake - just to say you have although the fountain will be off now so it doesn't freeze up.

Old Town - Interesting

Bus system excellent - frequent and efficient.

Geneva is not worth it in the Winter. As other people have already said, everything is shut, you have to know where to go to make it good, and its generally a bit expensive unless you don't know your way about.
