Im looking to buy an E39 M5 (early 2000) that needs the clutch doing.
What sort of (realistic) prices should I be looking to pay for a clutch replacement?

Ive been offered the car for good money as it belongs to a fella that works with me, we both know it needs some work doing to it, and with it being a 2nd car for me should give me spare time to get bits and bobs done on it smile

I am in Watford, know there is a local BMW dealer, but it doesnt have to be done at a BMW place to be specific, as the history is not all BMW so I dont mind sending it into a specialist, or any garage as long as the clutch is changed and works fine once done.

Many thanks.

Thanks for that.
Can anyone recommend a local specialist/mechanic/garage to do the job?
And should prices vary or will I definitely end up paying £600?

The two local specialists who are real experts are Phil Crouch @ CPC in Rickmansworth and his neighbour Gary @ Autobahn also in Rickmansworth.

Both are M specialists and will do a top job with hourly rates around £50 plus VAT.

Did the clutch and flywheel on mine in August 07. Total bill from my independent was about £1300 of which £300ish was labour.

ive got the parts lined up for £230 clutch, £290 flywheel (LUK parts, which i think is OE fitment?)
a buddy in the trade got them for those prices, seems cheap for parts for an M5.

does that sound fair?

the guy is asking around £500ish to fit them. i think its fair (i hear the gearbox and exhaust come off, and it isnt such an easy job) but would still like a second opinion.

much thanks for your replies.

£500 in labour sounds alot, I would say 6 hours.

Give Phil a call at CPC (mentioned above). Say i sent you and even if he's not getting the work he will tell you what he thinks it should cost.

Sachs are the OE supplier for the M5.

Mine supp from dealers was £240 inc vat.

£400 labour sounds better to me,the corroded exhaust manifold nuts will eat into most of that labour.

I got the whole job including parts and labour for around the £800ish mark complete!
Turns out a buddy who is a mechanic who I forgot owed me a favour could sort it for me, and its great because he has owned an M5 in the past so knew exactly what he was doing as carried out the same work on his car during ownership!!! biggrin

Thanks for your help peeps. Looks like I got lucky THIS TIME ROUND! smile

Aye, I managed to get mine done under warranty (long story), and the receipt for the work was just under that mark.

Just bought clutch kit and dual mass flywheel for £558 inc VAT the lot (LUK parts) from Andy at GSF Leamington Spa, next day free delivery too. Fitting at £264 from Venture 4x4 just round the corner from me. Cant be bad.

I brought mine thinking it just needed a 'few jobs' doing, turned into a money pit. Get it inspected before you pay for it.

Mine was mechanically sound but when I read this thread I'm so glad she's long gone, overpriced and over hyped.

Just my opinion.

Sir,

With all due respect how long are you going to continue trolling in every E39 M5 thread?

Ben,

Don't mean to troll just bloody annoys me what a rip off parts and labour are on something which isn't worth the monies.

I will go though as don't mean to troll.
