Career in the motor trade

Right, im 16 and studying A-levels at college, im passionate about cars and want a career in the motor trade. However im not very mechanically minded, i know alot of the theory of the mechanicals of a car but have never do anything in practice. Is this going to affect me later on? I was thinking about the R&D side of things and my dream job would be working for someone like Aston Martin or Jaguar in the R&D departments.

Im just after any suggestions that people have of jobs and also any 'wise words' from people already in this area work or have been in it.

If you want t work as a Professional Engineer in the car industry then you will need an Engineering or at least a numerate degree. Being practically good with your hands is not essential as that is not what the job entails, although you may find that many of the Professional Engineers are handy with the spanners. The guys that do need to be good with the spanners are the technicians.

When you say motor trade it tends to conjure up pictures of selling and servicing cars rather than designing and developing new cars.
