Hi guys,

I am having a slight issue with my m3.I have recently noticed that the engine note has a loud electrical purring noise when revved. The noise is quite loud and is becoming an annoyance on my daily commute.

I initially thought the noise was a common sign that the alternator was on its way out, however upon purchasing and fitting a brand new alternator, i am now clueless as the sound is still there!!!

I have brought the car to my local garage and they cant diagnose the problem. Anyone have any ideas??

With the engine turned off, does the fan turn easily? At idle, can you stop the fan with a rolled-up newspaper? If not, the fan clutch could be seized.

I had a similar noise but can't recall if it got louder with revving the car.

Mine turned out ot be the power steering pump and was a low humming/whining sound.

Didn't need to be replaced, th egarage owner just said it was a bit loud.

Good luck

Thanks for the ideas guys. It may be an issue with the power steering now that you mention it. Has anyone else had any issues with the power steering? I may have to do some research on previous threads. Cheers

Ive read that it should take regular ATF? or is there a specialist power steering fluid that is required?
