FRONT FACING SAFETY CAMERAS ARRIVE IN ESSEX

As part of a trial, the first front-facing safety camera is about to be installed in Essex.
The front facing cameras do not detect speed but will support existing rear-ward facing cameras. The camera will be the first of ten trial sites which are intended to aid fairness. The new front facing cameras will be used as additional evidence in cases where there are issues over broken or dirty rear number plates and where there are problems or disputes over driver identification.

Ten locations will be trialled at current fixed camera sites. The locations (attached) were chosen to reflect a good cross section of different communities and geographical areas.

The new additional cameras are activated only when the existing speed camera detects a vehicle exceeding a speed limit and flashes.

Tests have been carried out to ensure that the frontal flash will not adversely affect drivers (bullst). Five of them will be using an infrared system which is naked to the eye; 5 will have a magenta flash, as used with existing front facing systems already successfully used across the country.

Essex has not previously used any of the existing frontal photography systems because of the associated difficulty in detecting offending motorcyclists, who have number plates only on the rear of their vehicles.

A six month trial will begin in April 2004, with work beginning on installation of the first sites from 22nd January 2004. The results of the trial will be measured in many ways to determine if the new system has been effective, particularly in terms of accident reduction, speed reduction and in minimising valuable court and police time.

Potential Frontal Photography Locations:

Southend Road, Billericay

Nevendon Road, Wickford

A127 Arterial Road, Southend on Sea

Western Esplanade, Southend on Sea

High Road, Chigwell

Stifford Road, South Ockendon

Hogg Lane, Grays

High Street, Chipping Ongar

Southern Way, Harlow

Lambourne Road, Chigwell

i dont feckin believe this, that bastard partnership has just put 2 more scameras in on the a127 at eastwood and now they are putting these sneaky front facing feckin things in!!...what peeves me is there are atleast 4 cameras on the esponade already and the a127 between eastwood and southend vic has atleast 4 (not including the light camera's) yet where the most of the speeding happens (on the london road between chalkwell park and hamlet court road) there are none, not even an irregular talivan prescence....nadda,zip,nowt....theses scamera's are being put in for one reason only..REVINUE!..the m.feckin essex scamera partnership are becoming a right royal pain in the arse and imo its now the time to actually start burning the feckin scameras out!

the ones already on the a127 at eastwood are about 100yds inside the 40 limit.....im wondering how far inside the limit are these feckin things gonna be?.

I'm pretty sure we have them already, remember having to take a detour through Shenfield when the A12 was closed one night, and pretty sure I saw one there.

aparently they are going to be facing the traffic as the cars go past a scamera, effectively giving a front and rear shot of the speeding vehicle.

best look on the essex scamera website.

www.essexsafetycameras.co.uk

it looks like they are trying to stop the 'i dont know who was driving' excuses.

why is it when i watch crimewatch cctv footage of a serious assualt or theft, the image is grainy on ten year old tape and theres no real hope of tracing the culrit. yet, here we have a huge amount of effort being put into pin sharp images of these 'terrible criminals' who actually have done society and its members no harm at all. no, wait, i think i already know the answer to this one. as a side note, just as personal preference, i always drive with my sun visor down. dont ask me why, i just like it like that. surely then, a camera would have to be low indeed to peek under it to see my face? lol - or perhaps i should stick a picture of polly toynbee, red ken or his deputy jenny, whos surname i forget, to the other side and then rightously grass them up when the inevitable nip comes?

Update:

www.eppingforestguardian.co.uk/search/display.var.454110.0.police_deny_targeting_more_drivers.php

Police deny targeting more drivers

POLICE are stressing that they are not out to catch more drivers speeding when new front-facing cameras start operating at ten safety camera locations in Essex.

Safety camera locations in Chigwell and Ongar are to be among the first in Essex to see the front-facing cameras that will work in tandem with the existing cameras.

A speeding vehicle will activate both cameras, with the frontal picture used as additional evidence in cases where there are issues over broken or dirty rear number plates and where there are problems or disputes over driver identification.

Ten locations in Essex have been chosen for the new technology sites which have been picked to "reflect a good cross-section of different communities and geographical areas".

The cameras will be installed in Ongar High Street, Chigwell High Road and Lambourne Road, Chigwell, for a six-month trial starting in April. Work has already started on the installation work.

The camera in Southern Way, Harlow, is also among the ten locations.

Essex Police's casualty reduction officer Brian Ladd said driver identification had been an issue in some speeding cases nationally, and the new frontal picture would enable police to know without any doubt who the speeding driver was.

He said: "It's all about the fairness issue and additional evidence.

"Drivers have nothing to fear from any speed camera unless they're breaking the law. We're not out to catch people, we're out to change driver behaviour."

The one for Southern Way in Harlow has now been installed and is live. Exceed the speed limit past the standard rear facing Gatso and the front facing one will also go off. There has just been a report on these cameras on Look East on BBC1 and the pictures are very clear.

Also on Look East, responding to accusations that the police put mobile cameras behind "any bush they find", it was stated that there are very strict guidelines on the placing of mobile cameras that MUST be obeyed...
