Apparently she actually said "Just trim off the dead leaves!"

I mis-heard her:

...now we have no-where to put some tasteful sparkly Christmas lights!

Had a phone call of her this morning from work.
"What have you done to the plants?"
"Not sure what you mean"
"Is that meant to take the piss? I only noticed going to work this morning, I was going to put some lights on those you idiot!"
"Sorry"

Yep me too, whilst in the middle of trying to fit new brake pads and discs, I was up and down ladders and untangling 50 foot of various lights and extension leads!!! Then trying to get it all working on one timer!

... all in the pissing down rain!!!

Christmas decorations should be up for the 12 days of Christmas. Only. Go up Christmas Eve.

Not in mid-November, FFS.

Sort of like this really, I don't know what she wants doing in the garden - I just dig the holes:

Quite true, but its finding time to do the bloody things.
What with work and kids stuff I literally haven't a free weekend till January!
We put the tree up and outside lights yesterday, but they won't get switched on till Tuesday - promise!

see that's where you're going wrong

if you dig up plants and bulbs you'll only be asked to mow the lawn and tend the veg wink

Don't worry, there is a practical solution to your problem of not having anywhere to hang your lights.

They should grow back given time, so don't throw them out. They are called Cordyline australis (or cabbage/Torbay palms). It looks like they were the purple leaved form.

The easiest option to get you out of the doghouse is to buy a couple of replacements, carefully remove the 'pruned' plants and replace with the new specimens. Put the 'pruned' plants in some spare pots or plant them in a sheltered area in the garden.

Problem solved.

PS: Most garden centres will have these in stock.

If she is I hope she has a flat head, big ears and turns into a roast beef sandwich / kebab / fish supper (delete as required) on the stroke of midnight...

Curious that you took before and after photos...

Either you were up to mischief or you don't know a healthy green leaf when you see it. I suspect the former...

Thanks for the compliment!

The 'before' is one I've just photoshopped in answer to someone asking what they looked like er, well, before!
