Whats up with the search engine

Dosent seem to go back beyong march/april 2009 even if you say search for 8 years

Basically we have reached the point where there is more posted on PistonHeads than it can cope with and to make it work at all we have had to limit the time period it looks at.

We will be working to improve the search in the near future, but in the mean time the other option is to use google to search pistonheads. This can be done by typing in site:www.pistonheads.com/gassing/ in front of whatever you want to search for.

Would it be viable to make the search only available for the marque sections ? This is where the more useful information requiring genuine searching for details is kept.

The repost can keep themselves busy by looking after the lounge etc

and putting a note on the search page as to its current time or scope restrictions would be helpful

and making titles only the default option might reduce the search load as well

Because of the way the data is stored at the moment, searching a specific forum is not much quicker than searching the lot.

We will tweak the page to make it a little more obvious that it is limited at the moment, and we do have ideas in the pipeline which will make the search far better.

Would allowing us to build a Wiki of "keywords" in each forum help?. It would certainly rationalize postings so that say for example everyone would ensure 'diff' was in a post about differentials not just brand / car etc..

Manipulating the brain to think of strange terms to find what you want is a bit like a cryptic crossword clue
