Hopefully I should get a chance to go to Wales soon...I am going to spend a weekend there and was thinking if anyone had any suggested routes I should drive through; it would be a great help.

Also would anyone recommend any hotels or B&Bs where my car will be secure and where it is fairly inexpensive.

thanks in advance

To answer this we need to know which part of Wales you're going to.

I can tell you all about Cardiff but if you're going to Llandudno that's going to be no use to you at all.

If you're coming over the bridge I can thoroughly recommend the B4235 from Chepstow to Usk. It's not a road you ever hear about, but I reckon it's as good as some of the famous ones. It also finishes in a prime spot to head on to the Brecon Beacons if that's the plan.

Assuming you have a few days, I'd suggest the road above, into the Brecon Beacons/Black Mountains, then through the Elan Valley (around the dam) and into Snowdonia for the 'Evo Triangle'. Do a search for all three areas on here and dozens of roads will turn up.

What I did, on my last trip to Wales was download a program called TYRE that enabled me to stick a route with all the good roads into my TomTom and more or less just followed the sat nav.

Sorry, couldn't resist gratuitous pics!

Thanks, it's sorely missed. frown

With regards TYRE. You can download it here: http://www.janboersma.nl/gett/index.php

It has a rather snazzy Google Maps (or even Google Earth) based interface that allows you to drag and drop waypoints to lay out a route. You do have to be a bit careful to make a sat-nav proof route, so your TomTom doesn't try and put in a short cut, but it's not too bad.

The end result is you can save an intinerary file or download it straight to your TomTom. The only proviso is that it doesn't work with some of the recent low end models. The older ones and the fancier ones all do itineraries I believe.

gary, I'd be hugely grateful if you could send them to me as well! I went to Wales last year but wouldn't mind a proper 'tried and tested' route that people love biggrin

Great shot of the Volvo!

You've got to love a bit of Wales smile
