Hi All...I was thinking about getting a camera for SWMBO for xmas, but I have no clue what to get! We have some simple point and click compact digital camera's at the moment and she seems to be interested in the next step up, but I am not sure that a full SLR is the way to go.

I have been taking a little look at the Canon G11 as a good compromise...has anyone got any experience with this? Are there any other camera's that fit in the gap between a compact digital and an SLR?

TIA for any advice!!

The first thing is will she want to lug a big camera around with her? If the answer is no then I wouldn't bother getting an SLR just yet because to be able to get a good picture you need to have the camera with you in the first place.

I wanted to learn about photography but be able to carry the camera with me in a pocket so I got a Canon G9. It allows full control in the same ways an SLR does but in a small package.

Obviously you are never going to get pictures as good as you would with an SLR. You can get great pictures from the entry level SLRs out there that will be superior to either of the other choices and with a vast choice of lenses and accessories readily available. They will mostly transfer to better cameras if you upgrade. On the other hand if it is likely to sit in a cupboard most of the time then you could spend thousands on camera equipment and still never get a decent photo.

The new alternative to these choices is the Micro Four Thirds system which was introduced a little while ago (a year or so?). You get a reasonable sensor and the ability to change lenses but in a fairly small camera. If you get a Olympus Pen or Panasonic GF1 and stick with the pancake prime lens then they will fit in a large jacket pocket.
