Evening folks.

Im on the lookout for a treat for my 40th in 2 weeks, browsing the www and came across this little baby.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

Now im very green behind the ears with regard to watch buying and have never heard of this make, yet on looking they seem to make some cracking watches.

Any info, pointers and tips would be great

Thanks

Pete

Old american company that are now part of the swatch group so use eta and valjous movements.

I have one of their chronographs and I think it is pretty well put together. Some of their designs are a bit too much, but others are a lot more subtle.

£65 more than on ebay, presuming the ebay is not a fake.

Hamilton are a bit like Ball, Fortis, Damasko, Marathon & Glycine - good watches but don't get much of a mention, or at least that's my feeling - are they on about the same level or are any far better than the others?

Thats a nice one above...

I've bought a couple of watches from South Devon watches and would be the place to go for Hamilton.

Edit - just had a look at the link - that is a good price, but before you push the BIN button on it I would enquire if they have one on a bracelet. It is cheaper in the long run if you buy on the bracelet and get a nice leather strap for it than the other away around as buying the bracelet afterwards can be a very expensive business

If there is a branch of Ernest Jones close to you who stock them, would definatley recommend going and have a look at them, and the order the watch from South Devon.

Although have had a couple of the other brands mentioned, and although Fortis and Glycine are a little more money in the outlay I would not hesitate getting either of them, just have a look around and see what's out there.

Apologies for muddying the waters, but have a look here -

http://www.chronomaster.co.uk/index.htm

If it was a GMT you were specifically after, would hold on for one of the Steinhart Ocean 1 GMT which the word is coming back into stock in the next couple of weeks - Rolex looks at a 10th of the price!!!

Where are fortis available then? I am looking for one for my 50th, started with Stowa but now quite like the Hamilton Jazzmaster range.

Well, brought a blue hamilton from south devon via ebay, on next day delivery, after 4 days nothing so emailed them.

Sorry, yours is lost in post and was the last one, no more coming in the future was the reply.

Not impressed.

Oh well, start the search again.

Nearly bought one in Barbados back in 2006 (purely on looks I might add!) but because, at the time, there were no UK dealers I backed out of the transaction. Ernest Jones now sell them so probably a pretty safe bet to go ahead as repairs/servicing is now possible. IMO they are lovely looking watches and have a reasonably long history. Go for it!

it is a very nice watch.

I am not a watch expert and would not call myself a collector (although I have over 20) but In my humble uneductaed opinion you get quite a lot for your money with Hamilton.

My watch is one of those watches that is fit for most purposes. Its just classy enough to get away with as a dress watch yet just tool watch enough for every day wear also has dual time and a good water resistance. View back and a decentish auto movement.

If you shop around you can get some very good deals on them as well. I wouldnt anywhere near RRP for one making them even more of a bargain.
