A 19-year-old drink driver who ploughed a stolen Land Rover into the back of a policeman's car at 80mph has been jailed for more than two years.
Pc David Chapman was thrown through his car's rear windscreen and was unable to walk for four days after the accident caused by Daniel Smith at Riby Square, Grimsby. Smith, of Lestrange Street, ran from the scene over the A180 flyover - without helping Pc Chapman - in the early hours of October 3 last year.
Gordon Stables, prosecuting at Grimsby Crown Court, said the defendant had drunk four bottles of cider before ultimately coming into possession of the car, which had been stolen from Buckinghamshire.
He said: "He came along at speeds of 70mph or 80mph and shunted the Renault Clio into the junction.
"The police officer was left lying in the road with injuries. The Renault Clio continued moving across the road, collided with a barrier and came back.
"Bystanders stopped it just in time before it ran the police officer over."
Mr Stables said Pc Chapman, a father-of-five, had difficulty coming to terms with the incident.
He was forced to take 70 days off work following the collision, of which dramatic CCTV footage was played in court.
Smith's passenger Kelly Emptage, in a statement to the court, said Smith's behaviour changed when he saw his sister was calling his mobile phone.
Ms Emptage, who was arrested in relation to the crash and later released without charge, said she begged Smith to slow down and had imagined seeing herself lying dead in the road.
Defending Smith, who only had provisional licence, Richard Butters said such behaviour was completely out of character.
He said: "He is a young man with so many good qualities to speak of and not someone who sits about claiming benefit.
"There really is on the face of it no rational explanation for the way he did behave."
Smith pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving over the prescribed limit, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, handling stolen goods, driving while disqualified and without insurance.
He was jailed for a total of two years and one month.
Recorder Leslie Dickinson told Smith she had taken into account that he had asked Pc Chapman for forgiveness.
She said: "He (Pc Chapman) must be thanking his guardian angel he is still around.
"You indulged in a perilous course of action and must reap the consequences."
Paul.

Hit at that speed? By a Landrover? He was in Clio? Only 70 days off work? NO serious injury? He IS the luckiest bloke on the planet then!
I was hit by Escort travelling at that speed whilst in a similar type small hatch a few years ago. I was stationary on Motorway - one of those sudden clear/jam incidents. Road clear behind - apart from the Escort which was unfortunately being driven by man suffering coronary at the time. He hit the throttle hard and ploughed into me at around 80! He went through his windscreen and through my rear windscreen with the impact. I was VERY VERY SERIOUSLY INJURED at the time! I spent 12 months in hospital and a further 2 years in a wheelchair. I have metal pins in both legs and one arm. My other arm was almost severed with the impact. SoI can only conclude that he was one very lucky dude to escape horrific injuries! I had to retrain in another job because of the effects of this smash!
As for that bit on another thread here about RTAs costing the NHS hundreds of thousands. I can verify that the cost of my treatment back then and treatment I STILL receive NOW some 13 years later are met 100% by my insurance company! When the claim was eventually settled a vast chunk went to the NHS to refund the full costs of my stay in ICU etc.
My accident was caused by a man with a history of heart disease who was not fit enough to be behind the wheel of a car. I do not hold other motorists responsible for his own poor judgement of his own health, nor would any scamera have prevented that incident nor the accidents reported here as result of drunkards behind the wheel.

Why didn't the PC have his seat belt on? Two years is ridiculous - should have been let off with a caution or some community service. Too many motorists in jail!!
I suggest you read the story again. He was thrown out of the REAR screen, not the front windscreen. The force applied to the seats under this kind of impact causes them to simply collapse backwards. The seat belt only stops you going forward, not back.
A few years ago my father was shunted from the rear by a Golf doing just 40mph, who hadn't seen my father waiting to turn right into a junction. The seat collapsed, and he was thrown back. Fortunately he did not go through the rear screen, but was knocked unconcious.
Two years is outragous. He was disqualified already. He was not some hapless, never been in trouble before kid. He should have got a lot more. However, as PHers may have seen in the media recently, the maximum sentence for Dangerous Driving is only 2 years. This needs to be increased to provide a deterrant for idiots like him.

Hear! Hear!
And now there will be more stoned drivers as a result of the pot fiasco as well!
I would like to see a THINK campaign run on the effects of any medication and illness! But then I am probably biased!
Perhaps now is the time to have a look at all penalties and to make sure the punishment really fits the crime!
