Hello all,

I am in the process of looking for a car for my Dad and came across a 2002 VW Passat 2.5 TDI V6 auto estate for £3995 with 115000 miles on it.

There are a couple of - stone chips etc - marks on it but that is to be expected. It has FSH and 3 owners - I neglected to confirm whether all VW, so assume not.

Has anyone had experience of the Passat and the V6 TDi - I have been looking for an Audi - and if so was it good/bad/indifferant?

I spoke to someone today who maintains the engine can be difficult to work on, unreliable, and is generally not liked?

Advice appreciated.

Gerard.

Gearboxs:

All manuals are good. You wont find many A6 manuals with the bigger engines thought, but they do exist, and should be cheaper due to the market having no understanding of whats actually a good idea. All A8's are Auto.

Any A3 or TT with DSG is bad.

Tip tronic are generally trouble free, but as with any auto transmission they do suffer from failures at high mileages, say over 120k miles. Largely, we believe, because they are sealed for life (there is no set periodical oil change, and the oil is expected to last the life of the car).

ALL multitronics are very bad, but in fairness the very latest ones seem to be trouble free.

Engines:

2.5 TDI well worth staying away from.

2.7 + 3.0 TDI's we have very few issues with, just to odd EGR cooler leaking and sticking manifold flaps. Dont see enough 4.0 TDI's to know, the few we see have been ok.

In essence is you plan to run a car much beyond 120k miles, I'd avoid autos entirly.
If you like/need an automatic it needs to be tiptronic not DSG and definitely not multi.

Ignor the previous post

My uncles run one a Passat V6 Tdi and I have an A6 V6 tdi same engine different gearbox. Mine is the multitronic, his a standard slush one. Both are 53 plates, mine has been remapped.

The feels of his car is a lot more "sporty" than mine. This engine is very good if you don't trash it from cold and leave the turbo to cool down after a motorway or high speed stint (as per the manual).

On my A6 i had the problem with the gearbox @ 90k had it repaired and now I'm on 118k and it is fine apart from the water leak in the passenger foot well (different story).

Would I recommend a V6 tdi form the VW group yes, regarding gearbox it is a different stories, I like mine but it has its issues.

A V6 Tdi is also a trim level on Passat which indicate a more or less top of the range Tdi.

At that mileage, you need to check when it's next due a cambelt change. I think the official interval is 80k miles, but I was recommended 60k when I had my Allroad with the 2.5tdi v6.

On the Audi A6/Allroad (and I assume the Passat too) cambelt change was a front-end-off job and cost about a grand at a main dealer - so its worth checking and either getting it done as part of the deal or negotiating on price.

My experience of the engine was that it's really not all that economical (although mine was lugging the added weight of the Allroad gubbins and managed an average of about 30mpg). But it was smooth and torquey.

I have had a Passat V6 TDI 2000 almost from it being new. I have found the tiptronic gear box to be excellent. It has now done almost 116,000 miles. The only slight hiccup that I have experienced over the last year or so - say 2/3 times - is that on initial starting and moving off, the gear stays in 2nd. However, when I engage the manual side and accelerate before changing back, the auto takes over as normal.

The engine has been fine too; although it had to have a VW installed update at about 60,000 as the exhaust was very smoky. Since having that done it has been OK. I have had the regular services and in the last five years have changed the engine oil every 5,000 miles.

I think that taking one on second hand at this sort of mileage could be risky if it has not been well looked after. It would pay to have an engineers' report.
